Human trafficking is an issue that is plaguing our nation today. In its roots, trafficking dealt mainly with the transfer of slaves for labor around the world. Today, humans are trafficked for numerous other reasons such as sex. Trafficking today has expanded from its roots and now transcends race and age. This issue has become a global one that somehow seems to be hidden from everyone’s sight even though it is happening right in front of their eyes. A key problem in the fight against human trafficking is that it often happens in the shadows. There is not one set country or person that is responsible for it. Because of this issue, it is very difficult to prosecute those that are found guilty. The human trafficking industry is so intricate that when one person is caught that others immediately fill their place.

The key to fighting this major issue is spreading awareness. Awareness is being made not only by individuals, but by major corporations. By spreading the word of how this issue is happening it allows for citizens to be aware of how it is happening and gives them the ability to report its occurrence when they recognize it. Depending on the issue at hand, different organizations are brining awareness is various ways. Female sex trafficking is a major part of human trafficking. Because of the nature of the sex trade, it is hard to distinguish which workers are voluntary and which ones are forced (Lloyd). Half the Sky campaign helps bring awareness of the sex trade that takes pace worldwide today. Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn have published the book “Half the Sky” in an attempt to bring awareness to the sex trade in hopes to draw awareness and end it for good.
