On February 21st, 2014, Hugo Serrano from Computer Department of Florida Institute of Technology gave us a seminar named How Predictable are We? A Survey on Human Mobility Modeling. He introduced this topic with five human mobility modeling: Gravity Model, Random Walks, Continuous-Time Random Walk, Levy Flight and Individual Mobility Model. At the beginning, he made an introduction that research on human mobility is important for traffic forecasting, urban planning and epidemics modeling and human mobility analysis can be divided into two levels: population level and individual level. The previous human mobility date was most about the population level, which is lacking of spatio-temporal data about the individual level, because these studies were researched by Social scientist. This essay will discuss the issue of migration. Migration is movement by humans from one place to another. There are two types of migration, it is immigration and emigration. Immigration is movement by people into the country and emigration is movement by humans, who want two leave countries voluntary or involuntary. Economic, religious, education social and problems are reasons of migration. Mankind often migrates to modern, rich, multicultural countries, towns with high economy and good standard of living such as Prague, Germany, London, Los-Angeles, New York and shanghai. Ravenstein’s Laws are a set of laws proposed in the 1880’s that describe trends in human migration. The migrants experience related to many of Ravenstein’s laws, such as that most migrants relocate a short distance and remain within the same country. Almost all of the migrant’s immigrants were interregional (remained within the same country) and short distance. Another law that is shown by the migrant is that most long-distance migrants are adult individuals, rather than families with children. While the idea of human tracking has its share of benefits, there certainly are numerous pitfalls that also exist. While the ability to identify someone with an ID tag may have practical uses, the security and privacy issues could seem potentially alarming to some. Not only that, a closer look may show that the technology doesn’t necessarily offer very many advantages when considering the costs of nation-wide adoption of the technology. This paper will try to investigate into these issues, whilst attempt to come up with some solutions.
The effect of human travel has been twofold on the course of human history. It has served to transfer technologies, and it has also served to facilitate the spread diseases. There are examples of how technology travels from one culture to another all over the place, from the readings and movies we watch to things that we surround ourselves with everyday. Most of these technologies serve to make the lives of humans easier or more fun, but there are some inventions that have served to only destroy or make others lives worse. In some cases the technology’s originally intended usage was preserved, but in others the technology is used in different manners. An example from one of the first readings from this class is the Chinese invention of gunpowder. Originally it was used for religious purposes, but once the technology spread west through human travel, Europeans used the gunpowder and invented guns and ammunition. Once guns were invented, though, their use has not been altered. Though there are many different models, and types of guns, they all operate under the same principles and for the same purpose.

The movie “The Hundred Foot Journey” is a great representation of different cultures interacting as well as the different food habits. The movie is based on an Indian family who moves to Italy and wants to open an Indian restaurant across street from a famous Italian restaurant in the small town. The Kadam family wants to bring the Indian cuisine to a new culture and share some of their values. They have trouble expanding their culinary delights to the public because Marquerite the sous-chef doesn’t want any competition. Throughout the movie, secrets on certain dishes are shared and tricks to improve the certain style of food is greatly appreciated by both restaurant chefs.
It has been noted that utilizing data and models derived from living populations may not be suitable for identifying movements of past populations. Conditions today are vastly different from earlier times. Many of the migrations studied that are undertaken on todays populations are among populations who are technically advanced compared to very early prehistoric populations. The fear is that because of the technologically advanced nature of these populations that migration patterns differ from those of prehistoric populations. Tendencies and preferences may not be the same as they once were. It may never be identified if modern migrations are similar or vastly different from prehistoric ones, but for the time being it is one of the only tools we can utilize to try and get a glimpse of what life was like in the past.
Social mobility can be classified into three groups: vertical mobility, horizontal mobility, and lateral mobility. Vertical mobility refers to the up or down movement of an individual or group’s social or economic class. Those that gain property, income, status, and position are considered “upwardly mobile” while those who move in the opposite direction are considered “downwardly mobile”. Horizontal mobility refers to the movement of an individual or groups from one position to another but within the same social level. On the other hand, lateral mobility refers to the geographical movement of an individual or group between neighborhoods, towns, or regions.
