In the Novel The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain, Huck can seem dumb and naive at times. This tends to occur when he has to pretend to be someone else so he can conceal his identity from others. For instance, when Huck is pretending to be a long lost relative of the Wilks family that lived in England along with the Duke and the King so they could con them and make a big profit by inheriting the family's wealth. Then one day in the house on the day of the funeral of Peter Wilks, Mary Jane asks Huck if he's ever seen the king before and Huck forgot “his identity” and Mary Jane quickly becomes skeptical of Huck. Almost like when one studies for a test and they think they know the information pretty well but when they are handed the test, the pressure over takes the knowledge of the topic causing forgetfulness. This cleverness of Huck tends to be expressed when he is pretending to be himself instead of someone else. One moment where Huck expresses his intelligence is when he and Jim run into the steam boat and on the steam boat are a group of slave hunters that are looking for five runaway slaves and when they began to ask questions, Huck convinces the hunters that Jim is his father and that he has smallpox. Then the Hunter says, “Your pap’s got the smallpox, and you know it precious well. Why didn’t you come out and say so? Do you want to spread it all over?”(93-94). This clearly illustrates Huck’s great ability to outwit and think on his feet and it is clear that Huck has some smarts in him it's just that it is not express all the time due to certain factors that influence him to make certain decisions. Like when Tom is around because Tom has such a latch on Huck's mind to the point where Huck will pretty much do whatever Tom thinks is best because Huck believes he has a “gifted mind”. So yea sometimes Huck can be quite dumb when he is pretending to be someone else or when he is influenced by Tom but when push comes to shove it is pretty clear that Huck is a lot smarter sometimes than what Mark Twain makes him cut out to be because he has a gifted mind too.
