Quilting is a hobby of mine that has been around since the ancient Egyptians. Quilting is the process of stitching three pieces of fabric together, usually two pieces of fabric sand witching some sort of padding. I have been sewing since I was about seven years old and got my first sewing machine when I was about ten. My grandma taught me how to sew first by hand and then I got to move up to her machine until I got my own.
The first step you need to establish is who the quilt is for. The quilt that I am making is for my grandma. The next thing you need to establish is how big you want to make your quilt. I was thinking about making my quilt a bedspread, but I do not have the time to make a quilt that big. I am looking for a lap size quilt. This is the perfect size quilt because she will get a lot of use out of it when she sits in her chair. The size that I decided on was a six-foot by eight-foot rectangle. The final step you need to think about before you start making it is, what do you want your quilt to look like.
When I was trying to figure out what kind of quilt that I wanted to make I used the flow chart that we used from the Runco book. The problem was I needed to make a quilt by May 17th. The Encoding part that I am making it for my grandma. The search part I just as what designs could I use for my quilt. I thought of something with dogs, dog print, horses, western, Native American, and birds. To eliminate a few categories I took out dogs, dog print, and birds. The best fits I thought would be horses, western, and Native American. I thought these were the best fit because they could be easily combined. The evaluation part, I decided would be combining the different designs in order to make something that looked good. T...

...twelve-inch tan rectangles to finish the square. Then you need to multiple those numbers by how many squares there are to complete the boarder that which is 14.
Once I started sewing the squares together, I acquired a new problem. I had gaps in between the middle section and the outer boarders. I thought that I would just use more tan fabric, but I did not have enough. Instead I came up with a pattern of aligning the strips of colored fabric in the same order as the second boarder. Then when I placed the last boarder, I had gaps on the ends and on the sides. Because those squares are mainly maroon, and I had enough fabric I just used that. When I cut the fabric for sides of the boarder I unfortunately cut them too short. Instead of pitching them I used them for the top and bottom of the boarder, where it was too short. Then for the sides I just got bigger pieces.
Harriet Powers was born as a slave in 1837 in the state of Georgia. Powers was the creator of two specific quilts which are the most famous and well preserved examples of Southern American quilting tradition still in existence. Powers used the traditional African appliqué technique coupled with the European record keeping and biblical reference traditions. Using these techniques, Powers was able to capture historical legends and Biblical stories in her quilts.

Heritage in a family can be preserved in many different ways. Be it a diary written by your great great grandpa or a pot your grandma passed on to your mum who passed it on to you, nothing compares to the great comfort in understanding ones heritage especially when it involves the deep love and devotion of a strong mother. In the poem "My Mother Pieced Quilts" by Teresa Acosta and the short story "Everyday Use" by Alice Walker, both authors use imagery and figurative language to establish a quilt as a symbol for a mothers love of her children to illustrate their themes.
Quilts symbolize a family’s heritage. Maggie adheres the tradition by learning how to quilt from her grandmother and by sewing her own quilts. Maggie also puts her grandmother’s quilts into everyday use. Therefore, when Dee covets the family’s heirloom, wanting to take her grandmother’s hand-stitched quilts away for decoration, Mama gives the quilts to Maggie. Mama believes that Maggie will continually engage with and build upon the family’s history by using the quilts daily rather than distance herself from
Events happen throughout every family’s life, from family members brawling in historical battles, to the gaining of one’s cultural identity, the reciting of family stories, and the handing down of a descendant’s precious heirloom. I have been told many stories about my family, and my culture through my eighteen years of life. My family has also preserved a few pieces of our legacy to hand down from generation to generation.
If I am to use a square of side length 10cm, then I can calculate the
Mama is hoping that Maggie will use the quilt as a practical everyday item. She sees the quilts for their functional use that they were made to use in everyday life. Meanwhile, Dee finds this absurd. She thinks they are too valuable and priceless to be using as everyday necessities. Instead she will hang them. These two ideas of how to use the quilts are in complete contrast of one another. Mama finds them practical, Dee finds them fashiona...
Each person is a quilt. Aspects of our lives are stitched together into a unique patchwork masterpiece. When tribulation causes tears in our quilts, we can mend ourselves with any fabric or thread of our choosing. Some people’s quilts are a combination of colorful patterns and elaborate stitch work, others live in black and white. Every unique characteristic that makes us ourselves is sewn into our quilts. The people that surround me have woven themselves into the pattern of my life.
