Men and women are born two different kinds of species. They have different responds and attitudes in a great number of ways. The difference between men and women in Dorothy Parker's 'A Well-Worn Story' is represented through the attitudes of the man and the girl towards their relationship, the girl is passionate and zealous about this relationship, while the man is lukewarm and passionless. First, this essay will examine the girl's attitude towards this relationship, next it will demonstrate what is the man's attitude towards this relationship.

The female lover's attitude towards the relationship is enthusiastic and certain. Her fresh attitude and passion is fundamental key of her positive attitude, which is one of the aspects that shows the difference between men and women. In the first stanza, second line, "[m]y one love" indicates that this relationship might be the first relationship of the girl. Relationship is a new and fresh thing to the girl, she has no knowledge about it. However, the first relationship is very important to most girls, she does want this relationship to be beautiful as well as felicific. There is another idea of "One", "one" could also suggest the meaning of "only", which reveals that the girl is naive and innocent because she is willing to believe that this relationship will be her only relationship whereas the fact is most first relationships will not necessarily last forever. ...the last line of this stanza, the man's voice is compared to "terrible silver hands". Terrible, a strong emotion, shows the girl's fear towards the man's ruthless voice. Silver, as a kind of metal, is attractive, valuable but cold. The man is attractive to the girl, the girl loves him. Nevertheless, the man's attitude towards the girl is cold and in different. That's why the man's voice here will be compared to "silver hand". Above all, the man's attitude is cold, tepid and certain towards this relationship.

To summarise, the man's attitude toward this relationship is cold and indifferent, which is the opposite of the girl's enthusiasms. Both of them are certain about this relationship, but the girl is positively certain, the man is negatively certain. And this is how Dorothy Parker represented the difference between men and women in the poem 'A Well-Worn Story'.
