In Henrik Ibsen’s A Dollhouse he introduces Nora Helmer as the “spend thrift” of the family. Torvald was against her spending money habits and he warns her that she can't get into debt. Little did he know she was holding a big secret behind his back for several years. During the play, Krogstad reveals her secret to Torvald that she forged her father's signature after his death. Ibsen wants the reader to know that Nora was a victim of circumstance mainly because she was forced to sign the paper and if she didn’t Torvald would perish. Nora’s situation is that she truly does not know her husband. She seems to be operating under a pretense of how she thinks of him to be, and only, in the end, does she realize that her husband truly does treat her in a degrading manner. Nora is projected as a victim of circumstances as Ibsen views her making decisions on what she thought was right but lead to failures, character flaws, and conflict among her fellow characters. …show more content…

He has access to everything such as all the money. A woman from those times was never able to withdraw money from any man. Nora was thrown in the position to either save her husband and risk getting caught from taking a large amounts money from her father or let Torvald die. Nora had no way to control what was happening around her however, she was able to control the outcome of her decision. She decided to forge her father’s signature and save Torvald's life, however she kept the secret to herself for many years. Ibsen put Nora in many stressful situations during her eight years of marriage such as being blackmailed by the antagonist, Krogstad. He intimidates, blackmails, and threatens Nora in an effort to keep his job at the bank. When Torvald fires him he strikes back at Nora “I will tell you.
