Alessio Marisi Per. 4 Over the summer i read a lot of novels but my favorite one has to be Tuck Everlasting by Natalie Babbitt. This fantasy book is about a ten year old girl named Winnie Foster. Winnie lives in a small town called treegap. She was tired of her parents always being mad at her and giving her a hard time in her life so she runs away from her house with her horse into the woods. One day later, while in a wooded area her family owns, she sees a boy about 17 years old drinking out of a spring. He tells Winnie his name, its Jesse Tuck. Jesse Tuck is immortal by drinking the water from the spring. He’s not the only one who is Immortal his whole family is . Soon after that jesse's brother, Miles, and there mother, named May takes Winnie inside right away and tell them what is happening and kidnapped her because they were afraid of their secret being revealed. But they didn't know a man in a yellow suit was following them back to the house.when they got back to the house Winnie meets Angus, May’s Husband. After they heard the Man's plan May hits the him in the head with a gun. She later got arrested and was sent to jail for murdering the man and she was sentenced to be hanged. She is being held up in the county jail and now the Tucks and Winnie will try to break May out of jail. Jesse who has grown to like Winnie tells her to drink the magical water when you become 17. The break out came successful as Winnie pretends to be May in the jail cell while they escape. Winnie now has the decision of a lifetime to make. Does she drink from the fountain and get eternal life and stay with the Tucks or does she back to her own boring life? Read the book to find out! The book I choose for the book talk is “Dead and gone” written by Norah McClintock, this book talks about a murder mystery of Tricey Howard. The main character of the story is Mike, an orphan whose parents got killed in a car crash. He lives with his foster father named John Riel, who was once a police officer. During a swim meet, Mike see Mr.Henderson is staring at a girl name Emily without stopping. Then he informs Emily about what happened in the community center. However, as return Emily blackmails Mike to investigate Mr. Henderson. During the investigation, Mike finds nothing suspicious, but realize Emily is the daughter of Tricey Howard. In 1776, David McCullough gives a vivid portrayal of the Continental Army from October 1775 through January 1777, with sharp focus on the leadership of America’s greatest hero, George Washington. McCullough’s thesis is that had not the right man (George Washington) been leading the Continental Army in 1776, the American Revolution would have resulted in a vastly different outcome. He supports his argument with a critical analysis of Washington’s leadership during the period from the Siege of Boston, through the disastrous defense of New York City, the desperate yet, well ordered retreat through New Jersey against overwhelming odds, and concludes with the inspiring victories of Trenton and Princeton. By keeping his army intact and persevering through 1776, Washington demonstrated to the British Army that the Continental Army was not simply a gang of rabble, but a viable fighting force. Additionally, Mr. McCullough supports his premise that the key to the survival of the American Revolution was not in the defense of Boston, New York City, or any other vital terrain, but rather the survival of the Continental Army itself. A masterful piece of history, 1776 is not a dry retelling of the Revolutionary War, but a compelling character study of George Washington, as well as his key lieutenants, and his British adversaries, the most powerful Army in the 18th Century world. When I read this book, I went from a casual understanding of the hero George Washington to a more specific understanding of why Washington was quite literally the exact right man at the exact right place and time to enable the birth of the United States.
As the story progresses, you get to see Melinda “grow” and finally speak out about what happened to her at the party. In some cases during the story there are flashbacks. Some would be good and some would be bad.
Winifred "Winnie" Foster from Tuck Everlasting by Natalie Babbitt is a sheltered but curious pre-teen who wants to explore the world outside the gates of her home, but is never allowed to because of her helicopter parents. At the beginning, all she wants to do is run away and make a difference in the world and have an adventure of sorts. But what Winnie doesn't know is that particular summer will be one she will never forget. That summer will change her from a sheltered, shy, and obedient little girl in to a selfless, witty, and fearless hero. She will also have to make one of the hardest decisions of her life; whether or not she will join the Tuck's everlasting lives by drinking from the spring. Specifically, her crucial decisions throughout the novel are what make her character so gallant. Although it appears that Winnie Foster is a shy introvert who only wants to be left alone, she is actually an adventurous character who's personality transforms in to a heroic protagonist at the end of the narrative.
Summer fifteen is next, and an “accident” happens. We later in the end of the story learn this accident was a fire in the Clairmont house on the island. The fire was set by Cadence in a plot made by the Four Liars in an attempt to make the family realize how separate they are and hopefully be able to bring each other back together. Three of the liars die, leaving Cadence behind. The accident, being so tragic, leaves Cadence in shock, causing her to not be able to recall the fire she had set. At the very end, we learn the story was her speaking to the ghosts of the children after summer fifteen. Throughout the story, the author does an impeccable job of hiding the fact they are ghosts or had even died. She does so by narrating the story through Cadence’s eyes, thoughts, and memories. Throughout the book, Lockhart puts subtle hints and little clues toward the end of the book and what actually happens, making
Later, Jess’s music teacher invites him to spend a day in Washington D.C. while Leslie travels to Terabithia without him and the rope breaks and she drowns. Jess returns home that night to find out that his best friend Leslie is dead. Jess goes through the emotions of grieving, angry, to upset, from this incident. A few days later he returns to Terabithia so he can place a funeral wreath for Leslie. Without Jess knowing May Belle has followed him but cries for help since she was stuck in the creek.
Margaret Peterson sets her cliffhanger mystery book, Haddix: The Missing Found, in a modest neighborhood in Ohio. This book is in first person point of view, being told by the main character, Jonah Skidmore. The tone is fearful because Jonah voices his fears to his friend, Chip, multiples times throughout the story and usually has a fearful attitude when trying to overcome obstacles. Haddix: The Missing Found, is about a group of famous children from history who were stolen by futuristic time travelers and sent back to the 21st century as babies. These babies were soon adopted by random families around the world, and had a normal life. However, when they got to be around 13 years old, they start to get threatening letters sent to them telling them that they are, “one of the missing” (Peterson 20). These kids proceed to venture on a journey to find the person who is sending these creepy letters, and go through many obstacle along the way. Overall, I thought that Haddix: The Missing Found was a great read because it was very mysterious and kept me guessing the whole time I was reading, and I found that the characters were really relatable.
The chapter starts of with May at the wailing wall. After 20 minutes everyone got flashlights and started to look for May.After looking for a while and having no luck finding May they call the police to try and get more help. They end up finding her lying in the river with a rock on her holding her down. They are all really sad after seeing this and take her out of the water to see if she might still be alive. She ends up dying from drowning in the water. A cop started asking Rosaleen and Lily questions on what happened and asked her why she was at the house. Both of them had to lie about how they got to the honey farm and say where they are going. The cop says that Lily should find a better place to stay because he is probably racist. Later
Tuck Everlasting by Natalie Babbit was published by Houghton Mifflin Company in 1996. It has a Guided Reading Level of “X” and a 5.0 ATOS reading level. The book is most interesting to children in grades 4-8. It tells the story of ten-year-old Winnie Foster’s encounter with the Tuck family, who all stopped aging after drinking water from a magic spring. She falls in love with their family and must decide if she wants a life of immortality with them. Director Jay Russell brought the book to life in 2002. The movie received a rating of PG for some violence.
I read Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery. This book is about a young orphan child, with a never-ending imagination, named Anne. Anne has been taken in and out of orphanages all her life. Until, one day Matthew Cuthbert and his sister, Miss Marilla Cuthbert, are interested in having a young boy to live with them. They called the orphanage and told them to send the child on the train. He goes to the train station to pick the child up, but to his surprise he found Anne. Anne tells Matthew how she imagines living there would be like. She was so set on staying that Matthew just couldn't leave her at the train station. While Addie lies dying on her corn-shuck mattress, Darl convinces Jewel to take a trip with him to pick up a load of lumber. Darl knows that Jewel is Addie's favorite child. The trip for lumber is a contrivance- Darl's way of keeping Jewel from his mother's bedside when she dies. A wheel breaks on the wagon, and before Darl and Jewel can replace it, bring the wagon home, and load Addie's body onto it for the trip to Jefferson, three days have passed. By this time, heavy rains have flooded the Yoknapatawpha River and washed out all the bridges that cross it. The river is vicious, and the Bundrens' mules drown. The wagon tips over, and. Jewel, on horseback, manages to keep the wagon and its load from drifting downstream, saving his mother’s decomposing body. When the family finally makes it through the ordeal, they spend the night at the Gillespies' farm. Darl sets fire to the barn where Addie's body is stored in an effort to spare his mother. However, Jewel once again saves her coffin with a heroic act.
She takes a job in a white lady named Ms. Cullinan’s home as a maid, who calls her Mary for her own convenience and lack of respect. This enrages Maya and in order to get away she smashes the finest china to get her fired. At her eighth-grade graduation, a white man comes to speak in front of everyone and he states that black students can only become athletes or servants which makes Maya furious. Later, when Maya develops a nasty toothache, Momma decides to take her to a white dentist who refuses to work on her. Momma claims that she lent him money during the Great Depression so he owes her a favor but he says he’d rather stick his hands in a dogs’ mouth. Lastly, one day while Bailey is walking home he sees a dead black man rotting in a river and a white man present at the scene says he will put both the dead man and Bailey in his truck. This terrifies Bailey and Momma wants to get them out of Staples so she sends them to Vivian’s again in San Francisco. There they live with Vivian and her husband Daddy Clidell who is a nice man to Maya, and has a lot of money from his businesses. One summer Maya goes to live with her father Big Bailey and his girlfriend Dolores, who are poor and live in a trailer. Maya and Dolores do not get along and constantly fight, so Maya runs away and lives with a group of homeless teens
