Body Image Trying to reach unrealistic standards is a force that drives many people right over the edge. “Body image is a complex concept that affects how people feel about themselves and how they behave”. Anyone can develop an eating disorder and many people do not notice them. During the early teen years girls start to lose self confidence, and start to gain a negative body image (“Body Image And Disordered Eating”). Even though most teenagers want to be skinny, body image negatively affects the lives of them because teens become suicidal, depressed, and pick up on eating disorders. Suicidal thoughts are directly related to negative body image. There were reports of adolescents who weighed more than the average weight, also reporting to have thoughts of committing suicide (“Body Image Tied to”). Teenagers who did not weigh what they believed was the “normal” size considered suicide as a way to escape their problems. “At age 10, girls who believed they were overweight were significantly more likely to think about suicide than boys” (“Body Image Tied to”). According to studies, females seem to have problems with a negative body image at a younger age than males. All the images of perfection create life ending thoughts. …show more content…

“Ultimately a negative body image can lead to unhappiness and depression both of which are also symptoms of low self- confidence” (Farrar). Having a negative body image makes teens see only the poor qualities, therefore becoming depressed is more likely. Improving self-esteem by focusing on the good qualities and achievements instead of only the flaws helps overcome depression (Farrar). Having a positive aspect of things in life, such as body image, will also help to get rid of depression.
