To begin with, Christmas is a time that is filled with anticipation and excitement. Decorating the house, making cookies, and putting up the tree are some of my favorite memories. Sharing this with my family and friends are really important to me. The Christmas season gives me a chance to get into the holiday spirt. Being able to participate in holiday traditions makes the Christmas season more enjoyable.
In the meantime, as a child, my family would decorate the house for Christmas. Growing up, I have three siblings. All of us really enjoy helping our mom get ready to decorate. Being surrounded by your loved ones as your making the dough is really special. My mom and my sister have many recipes that we make together. By making cookies, it gives my family the time to talk to each other. As we talk to each other, we are able to make memories for years to come. Some of my favorite cookies to make are cut outs, orange cookies, peppermint cookies, peanut butter blossoms, and many more. My mom’s orange cookies are one of the moist cookies I have tasted. The cookie has orange inside of it. The frosting contains orange juice which makes it a delicious cookie. Furthermore, cut outs are the perfect way to get the Christmas spirit. Having many Christmas cut-outs enables me to get fun and creative in the kitchen. My family uses sugar cookies, and gingerbread for the cutouts. We enjoy spending time in the kitchen and singing Christmas songs. One of the most classic cookies we make is the peanut butter blossoms. Making these cookies are really enjoyable, because they have peanut butter and chocolate. In the kitchen we enjoy playing Christmas music. Doing this, helps us to get in the sprit of Christmas. Cookies are one of the way that my family and I bond together. My siblings and I make gingerbread houses each year. As we make the gingerbread houses we have fun laughing, and talking to each other. We really enjoy spending time together as a family and being creative. We love teaming up and competing against one another. Although we do not have prizes, we enjoy the competition. Christmas, I love Christmas, I love shopping for presents for my loved ones, thinking about the gifts I want to give, the wrapping and arranging them under the beautiful Christmas tree. I love the planning and preparing Christmas dinner, filling the house with wonderful fragrant smells hoping everyone comes and has a good time and still talking to each other when they leave. Most of all though, I love the Christmas tree, I love the excitement as the hunt begins for the perfect tree finally when everyone is in agreement we bring it home hoping it’s not too tall too short too fat or too skinny and most important stands up straight. Somehow it always fits and always looks beautiful, I am never disappointed and my tree is always perfect and beautiful.

My favorite holiday is Christmas because I feel joyful. Also, I can feel how warm the atmosphere is, almost like a fireplace. In an apartment with white walls, there is the living room with a tall, dark green Christmas tree decorated with colorful blue, pink and purple Christmas ornaments, and colorful red bright lights. In the meantime, my mom and my husband are cooking dinner, and there is the smell of a pumpkin candle burning on top of the table. While we wait for the food to be ready, we all sit down in the living room to watch some classic movies like “Rudolph”, “The Little Drummer Boy”, and even if it’s not classic “Dr. Seuss, How the Grinch Stole Christmas”.

Christmastime was always a magical time of year for me. The beautifully decorated shopping malls, with toys everywhere you looked, always fascinated me. And the houses, with the way their lights would glow upon the glistening snow at night, always seemed to calm me. But decorating the Christmas tree and falling asleep underneath the warm glow of the lights, in awe that Santa Claus would soon be there, was the best part of it all. As a child, these things enchanted me. Sure, the presents were great, but the excitement and mystery of Christmas; I loved most of all. Believing…that’s what it was all about. When I think about Thanksgiving and Christmas, the first thought that comes to mind is the good food. Every year my family and I prepare many homemade dishes to celebrate the holidays. For Thanksgiving, my family and I will go all out the way in preparing dinner. We will actually start preparing the food two days in advance, so we can make sure that we have everything is prepared. Although I have grown up to be entirely inept at the art of cooking, as to make even the most wretched chef ridicule my sad baking attempts, my childhood would have indicated otherwise; I was always on the countertop next to my mother’s cooking bowl, adding and mixing ingredients that would doubtlessly create a delicious food. When I was younger, cooking came intrinsically with the holiday season, which made that time of year the prime occasion for me to unite with ounces and ounces of satin dark chocolate, various other messy and gooey ingredients, numerous cooking utensils, and the assistance of my mother to cook what would soon be an edible masterpiece. The most memorable of the holiday works of art were our Chocolate Crinkle Cookies, which my mother and I first made when I was about six and are now made annually.

Emma, Marissa and I are in charge of the making the lefse. This has been our job ever since we were little girls, becoming experts through all our years of experience. My grandma makes the most amazing food and always has enough to feed us for a week. After we stuff ourselves full of delicious, lasagna, salads, and hot dishes all made with love and while the adults lean back comfortably in their chairs, us kids go put on our pajamas and troop downstairs to open our gifts. The most memorable gift would be the ring my grandma gave me that used to be my great-grandmothers who died a couple days after my grandma turned fifteen. My great-grandma loved to travel and had a great passion for fashion, so this circle of metal with a little diamond in the middle and a floral pattern surrounding it, had been bought in California and has been in the family since. “Bang, bang, bang!” A huge pounding comes from the front door. Dogs bark, adults grin, and we race to open the creaky door. Santa Claus, eyes twinkling, dressed in red with coal-black boots, and swinging a sack over his right shoulder, steps inside. He plops down heavily; ringing merry bells and passes them off to David, my brother, telling him seriously to keep ringing them so Rudolf won’t fly away without him. With wide eyes, little David shakes the bells with such rigor that if Rudolf was in the North Pole he would be able to hear them. We each take a turn perching on his knee, hesitant at first but then opening up and telling him our age and that, “yes we have been really, really, really good this year.” As Santa’s beard tickles our chin as we lean in close for a picture and his big belly shakes as he laughs at the same time as you start to giggle. Christmas to me is a celebration, which includes spending time with my family, decorating the entire house, inside and out, and shopping, for the people I love. Doing this with the people I love is what means the most to me. Spending Christmas with my family is very important to me. We usually gather and celebrate at my parent’s house, in East Tennessee. My husband, our three children, and myself travel from California. My two sisters, their husbands, and children come from a nearby town, for our celebration.
Ever since I could remember, I have spent Christmas at my grandmother’s house, a house which is full of comfort, warmth, and happiness. At Christmas, I have always been able to escape the cold and dark real world allowing myself to truly enjoy just several moments in time. These moments have left impressionable memories from my childhood making Christmas a holiday that is special to me and my family. It is a time for my family to get together, share stories, laugh, and even cry.
As I look out my window I see tiny snowflakes slowly drifting down. I can hear the roar of laughter coming from the living room downstairs. Soon enough Saint Nick will be upon us. Christmas always brings everyone home for the holidays. Christmas is my favorite holiday because of the traditions my families and I celebrate that include our Christmas Eve routine, Christmas morning routine, and giving back to our community.
