The picture of the American Dream is a white picket fence, a car, two children, a dog, and a big house with a lawn. The American Dream is one of equality and opportunity; the ability to succeed and be whoever and whatever one wants to be, limited only by one's own drive and talent (Dowd, N. E. 2016, p. 47). The Dream is defined as having the opportunity to come from nothing and being able to get everything. It inspires individuals to want to be better and to want to have their own success stories. "The process of attaining the American Dream is, in essence, the process of becoming middle class, which encapsulates moving up the socioeconomic status ladder, becoming homeowners in (often suburban) communities, and participating in the political process" (Clark, A. C., 2003, p. 6). It is a dream of America being the land of opportunity to be better, richer, fuller for everyone, it is about ability and achievement.

The Athletic Dream is one alternative route that African American males sought out to attain. "The athletic dream continues to be a career dream for many African American males" (Parmer, 1993, p.141). The American Dream for many African American males is finding success through sports, believing the only way to the Dream is attainable is through excelling in sports. It is the desire of African American youngsters to pursue superstardom through athletics, which provides an easy and quick path to success and mobility" (Parmer, 1993, p.132) African America youth believe the Athletic Dream may be more attainable than the pursuit of other career goals.
