How Television Has Affected America
Ever since television was introduced to America in 1947, it has changed a lot about American culture. Ever since television was first introduced to America, it has changed the culture. It’s affected American families in positive and negative ways. Whether the television is big and bulky or thin and flat, everyone’s eyes seem to be glued to it. Television competes with other human interactions, such as talking to family and friends, school, church, etcetera. It’s shaped many things -- people’s opinions on different topics, people’s choices in an election, and people’s views on things like race and class. It’s changed the who the people in the American population are, and how other countries view us.
Television has always been an industry whose profit has always been gained through ads. But in chapter 2 of Jason Mittell’s book, Television and American Culture, Mittell argues that the rise of the profit-driven advertising television model can be traced back through American television history, and that the rise of the profit-driven advertising model of television actually helped to mold American culture both from a historical standpoint and from a social standpoint.
Many of the technological advancements in entertainment helped people live a much happier and exciting life. In the articles “The Box That Changed America” by Lauren Tarshis and “Television Transformed” also by Lauren Tarshis, they show ways of how americans are drawn to TV because of everything it offers. In the article “Television Transformed” by Lauren Tarshis, it shows how more interesting TV is, and how everyone can watch what they want. The article states, “The number of quality shows is higher than ever, with far more diversity in casting. Families no longer have to fight over what to watch because individual family members can watch what they want on their own devices”(Tarshis 23). This shows how families no longer have to fight, because everyone get watch on their own technology. Plus, now there is a bigger variety of what they can watch.
The media has been a part of the daily life of the American people for the longest time, because of this fact, the media influences the decisions and views of how people should live. One big part of the media that tends to start to develop a sense of how the day-to-day American should live is Disney. Since kids are the main source of Disney’s billion dollar industry children have become an important dimension of the social theory (Giroux 1999: 65). “Within this context, television emerges as a consumer-oriented medium that reflects advertisers’ desire to reach a young, upscale, and primarily White audience” (Goodale1999; Henderson and Baldasty 2003: 100). As a result other races and ethnic groups other than white Americans are often put aside when it comes to the social media view of how Americans should live.
In conclusion, I will say that television has changed the way families were and are because when parents use television as a baby sitter they began to lose touch with their children. Also, television affected how a child would progress physically or mentally. We as parents should spend more time with our children and cut down the television time. The relationships that build between parents and children throughout their lives have a long lasting impact on what kind of person he or she will become.

Marie Winn claims that television over the years have effected many American family life. Since television is everyday ritual, many American tend to spent more time with television than they do with their family and this result in unhealthy relation in family. I never realized the impact television has had on my family until recently. My parents divorced eleven years ago, resulting in my sisters and I being raised in a single parent household. From this, it is easy to see that our society cares a lot about health care and making sure that they feel healthy.
The invention of the television has had an impact on all aspects of American's lives. It has affected how we work, interact with others, and our foreign relations. One part of American society that it has especially affected is presidential elections. Television has impacted who is elected and why they were elected. Since the 1960's television has served as a link between the American public and presidential elections that allows the candidate to appear more human and accountable for their actions; consequently this has made television a positive influence on presidential elections. But it has also had a negative affect on elections, making presidential candidates seem like celebrities at times and making it easier to publicize mistakes made by candidates.
Canadian television has long been an underappreciated and underestimated culture medium, which has yet to make an impact on the Canadian cultural identity. It’s not that Canadian’s disregard television as a means of entertainment; but rather that many Canadian’s have ignored the domestic content on their television screens. This can be attributed to Canadian television’s “reputation for being both cheap, and cheap looking.” (Houpt, 2014); as the industry has often created dramas and reality television, which unsuccessfully mimic the American counterpart that viewers are already watching (Tinic, 2010). The entertainment world: How does television actually influence us? Within today’s society, it would seem like television has become an almost norm or the way of life compared to the postmodernists views on entertainment. Nearly everyone has it, watches it and more importantly has been influenced in some way by the effects of these moving images becoming ever more present in popular culture. Some call it pointless, others inspiring, but how does television actually affect those who live in a contemporary style of life compared to the more traditional forms or culture?
Reading and writing. Painting and drawing. Dancing and singing. Just a few of the many forms of entertainment that shape American culture. Many people seek various outlets in their leisure time, both active and passive; and whether it be sports, TV, music, etc. most can agree that entertainment is a fundamental aspect of today’s society. Although its influence is undeniable, some people (like those that Neal Gabler writes about in his book Life the Movie: How Entertainment Conquered Reality) may argue that this is bad for our society, only leading to corruption. While history can support Gabler’s idea that entertainment has the potential to negatively affect our morals and social order, it has also been beneficial to our society and can be used in constructive ways. Whether entertainment is good or bad is dependent on the person and how they chose to utilize what is around them.
