Dr. Robert Anthony once stated, “Courage is simply the willingness to be afraid and act that anyway.” Can courage give you confidence and strength? For this reason, courage has helped me conquer my worst fears. For example, I used to be afraid of heights, but, after being dared to jump off a beam my fear faded away. Rikki-tikki-tavi by Rudyard Kipling is about how courage can overcome your fears.
Rikki-tikki is a brave character in this story. One reason that proves that Rikki-tikki is brave is, “He was afraid for the minute; but it is impossible for a mongoose to stay frightened for any length of time, and though Rikki-tikki had never met a live cobra before, his mother had fed him on dead ones, and he knew that all grown mongoose’s business

in life was to fight and eat snakes” (pg.8). This establishes that Rikki-tikki is brave due to the fact he stayed put and knew that his purpose was to fight cobras. Furthermore, Rikki-tikki’s braveness leads back to how courage can overcome your fears because Rikki-tikki was afraid that he was a small mongoose and had never met a real cobra before, but he knew the generations that had past through his life had killed them and he could too. Another reason that sustains that Rikki-tikki is brave is, “It must be the head,” he said at last, “the head above the hood; and when I am once there, I must not let go.”Then he jumped. The head was lying a little clear of the water jar, under the curve of it; and as his teeth met, Rikki braced his back against the bulge of the red earthenware to hold down the head. This gave him just one second’s purchase, and he made the most of it. Then he was battered to and fro as a rat is shaken by a dog—to and fro on the floor, up and down, and round in great circles, but his eyes were red and he held on as the body cartwhipped over the floor, upsetting the tin dipper and the soap dish and the flesh brush, and banged against the tin side of the bath. As he held, he closed his jaws tighter and tighter, for he made sure he would be banged to death, and for the honor of his family, he preferred to be found with his teeth locked. He was dizzy, aching, and felt shaken to pieces, when something went off like a thunderclap just behind him; a hot wind knocked him senseless and red fire singed his fur. The big man had been wakened by the noise and had fired both barrels of a shotgun into Nag just behind the hood” (pg. 14). This shows that Rikki-tikki is brave due to the fact that he had the guts to fight one of the best cobras just so he can protect his family. Even though Rikki-tikki was afraid to kill the cobra he had conquered his fear having courage in himself, in other words, bravery. Courage can help you overcome your fears was shown through Rikki-tikki but, it is also shown in Nagiana’s personality. Nagaina, another character in the story is a weakling and clueless.
One reason that proves that Nagaina is a weakling is, “‘But are you sure that there is anything to be gained by killing the people?” said Nag.“Everything. When there were no people in the bungalow, did we have any mongoose in the garden? So long as the bungalow is empty, we are king and queen of the garden; and remember that as soon as our eggs in the melon bed hatch (as they may tomorrow), our children will need room and quiet” (pg.12-13). This sustains that Nagaina is a weakling because Nagaina tells Nag to kill the family instead of fighting Rikki-tikki head on. Nagaina is different then Rikki-tikki due to the fact that Rikki-tikki is not afraid of anything for a long amount of time, Nagaina in the end overcomes her fear by fighting Rikki-tikki head on. Another reason that shows that Nagaina is clueless is, “‘Son of the big man that killed Nag,” she hissed, “stay still. I am not ready yet. Wait a little. Keep very still, all you three! If you move, I strike, and if you do not move, I strike. Oh, foolish people, who killed my Nag!” (pg. 17). This proves that Nagaina is clueless because instead of going after Rikki-tikki she goes after the family that Rikki-tikki was taken care by. Nagaina being a weakling and clueless is not the same as Rikki-tikki because Rikki-tikki would have gone straight for the enemy not to its supporters, also Nagania being a weakling and clueless establishes that courage can …show more content…
overcome your fears because even though she was always going for the wrong people at the very end she fought Rikki Tikki head on. Nagaina is one weakling and sure is clueless but, proves herself in the end. The author Rudyard Kipling, uses personification in this story to help demonstrate human qualities through animals.
One piece of personification shown in the text is, “Angry as he was, Rikki-tikki was very frightened as he saw the size of the big cobra” (pg. 13). This is personification because the author describes Rikki-tikki’s emotions as if a human was saying them. Furthermore, this piece of personification shows that courage can overcome your fears because even though Rikki-tikki was afraid he still fought and won. Another piece of personification shown in the text is, “Chuchundra sat down and cried till the tears rolled off his whiskers. “I am a very poor man,” he sobbed. “I never had spirit enough to run out into the middle of the room” (pg. 12). This is personification because the author gives Chuchundra a human cry for emotional reasons; animals don’t do that. Furthermore, this piece of personification shows that courage can overcome your fears because Chuchundra was afraid that Nag and Nagaina might be mistaken for Rikki-tikki that, Rikki-tikki was not going to let that happen. Personification was used in this story to give human qualities to
animals. In conclusion, throughout the story Rikki-Tikki-Tavi courage can overcome your fears was portrayed through several different characters. Rikki-tikki was afraid to go against Nag, but having courage in himself made him overcome his fear. Nagaina was a weakling and was clueless, but she had started to gain sense when she started to have courage on fighting Rikki-tikki head on. Lastly, personification was used in this story to portray human qualities in animals. Courage can overcome fears portrays an important message to everyone because we are all capable to do anything in life, to be able to do it, we must be able to conquer our fears.
Rikki-tikki is proud of himself because he helps the animals and the humans by killing the snakes or dangerous animals. The humans first find him after the flood washes him out of his berrow. Teddy wants to give him a funeral but his mom seas that maybe he isn't dead. He helps a bird and he helps the humans. On Page 16 “Teddy shouted to the house: “Oh look here! Our mongoose is killing a snake.“ On Page 18 and 19 Rikki-tikki killed Nag, “The big man picked up Rikki-tikki and he had said it's the mongoose again, Alice: the little chap has saved our lives now.” Teddy's father, the big man beats the snakes after Rikki bites the snakes to make sure the snakes are dead. Rikki kills the eggs in the melon bead so that there aren't little Cobras around
Mark Twain best described courage when he said that, “Courage is resistance to fear, mastery of fear - not absence of fear” (Twain). Both in The One Who Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest by Ken Kesey and Watership Down by Richard Adams, the authors deal with the topic of courage and each share a similar view on it as this quote. Indeed, both authors suggest that courage is not accumulated simply by acts of heroism, but rather by overcoming fears and speaking one’s mind as well. These books are very similar in the way that bravery is displayed through the characters in an uncommon way. Firstly, an example of bravery
An example of courage, as the judgment that something else is more important than fear, is through the character of Kak in B for Buster by Iain Lawrence. In this novel, Kak is characterized as a young, determined boy, desiring to turn himself from a comic book reading boy into a World War II hero. Planning to escape his drunken, abusive father, Kak enlists himself in the Canadian Air Force although he is underage and only sixteen years old. During his first mission, he is becomes frightened of the risk of not coming home alive, but doesn?t show his emotions because of his austere, intrepid crewmen. During this mission, Kak did not have an absence of fear, but he felt that becoming a hero like the ones in his comic book, and accomplishing his dream of fly, was more important than his fear of dying.
Rikki-Tikki-Tavi is most definitely a hero for protecting Darzee, the tailorbird, from Nag and Nagina. Rikki-Tikki-Tavi who is exploring the garden for the first time, meets Darzee. Darzee tells Rikki-Tikki-Tavi that a baby fell out of her nest the other day and Nag ate it. Nag confronts Rikki-Tikki-Tavi for the first time, and Rikki-Tikki-Tavi has no clue what to do, never fighting a snake before. Nag and Nagina try to get to Darzee, but Rikki-Tikki-Tavi makes sure they don’t by his quick and subtle movements. Rikki-Tikki-Tavi ends up killing Nag and Nagina goes away. In that scenario Rikki-Tikki-Tavi risks his life, because he did not know how to fight a snake, and ended up saving Darzee.
Anyone can be a hero by helping someone out or even defeating a snake. In the short story “Rikki-Tikki-Tavi” by Rudyard Kipling, a mongoose named Rikki-Tikki-Tavi gets swept away from his home. A family with a son named Teddy, takes Rikki into their house. He soon meets two snakes named Nag and Nagaina that he must defeat. The authors of this short story uses characterization and foreshadowing to show the reader that anyone can become a hero.
Paul Zindel, author of The Pigman uses several examples of personification. One example of personification is “the door opened with a sigh”. This example shows that the person opening the door has a down mood and slowly opens the door. Another example of personification is “Right in the bright sunlight you can see the flashing
The book Rikki Tikki Tavi is about a mongoose who saves a human family from snakes. In the beginning Rikki Tikki is washed away from his home in a summer flood, where humans rescue him. He decides to stay and meets Nag and Nagaina ,two king cobras who try to kill him. The young boy who saved Rikki finds him in the garden but
Rikki Tikki is a brave and curious character in this story. Rikki-Tikki- Tavi is brave in this story because he sticks up for his family and he doesn’t care how big or how small they are. Evidence that supports my character traits is, “Rikki-Tikki knew that he was a young mongoose and it made him all the more pleased to think that he had managed to escape a blow from behind.” (page 9). Rikki-Tikki’s bravery towards his family gave him the confidence to fight the snakes. His bravery showed his foster family how much he really cared about them. Rikki- Tikki examined the entire house and puts himself in daunting positions (paragraph 15). This evidence shows that Rikki-Tikki is an interested character because he doesn't show that getting hurt will stop him
“Courage is resistance to fear, Mastery of fear, Not absence of fear. ”(184) This is a quote from the book The Boy Who Dared, written by Susan Campbell Bartoletti. The book is about A kid named Helmuth that lives in hamburg germany. The nazi party takes power and Helmuth doesn’t agree with everything the do.

And now I see clear, I know in the future courage will help me stand up and make it to my goals in life.
Courage, courage is accomplishing something that frightens someone else. In life people aren’t afraid of the same thing those people that aren’t afraid are the courageous ones. The lawyer goes through this battle to win this case, but also at the same time teaching his children about life. Nag, Nagina, and Karait have to be brave. They have to be brave because they have to fight Rikki Tikki. Nag also has to be brave when he goes into the bathroom to try to kill the family.
