Dr. Robert Anthony once stated, “Courage is simply the willingness to be afraid and act that anyway.” Can courage give you confidence and strength? For this reason, courage has helped me conquer my worst fears. For example, I used to be afraid of heights, but, after being dared to jump off a beam my fear faded away. Rikki-tikki-tavi by Rudyard Kipling is about how courage can overcome your fears.
Rikki-tikki is a brave character in this story. One reason that proves that Rikki-tikki is brave is, “He was afraid for the minute; but it is impossible for a mongoose to stay frightened for any length of time, and though Rikki-tikki had never met a live cobra before, his mother had fed him on dead ones, and he knew that all grown mongoose’s business …show more content…

One reason that proves that Nagaina is a weakling is, “‘But are you sure that there is anything to be gained by killing the people?” said Nag.“Everything. When there were no people in the bungalow, did we have any mongoose in the garden? So long as the bungalow is empty, we are king and queen of the garden; and remember that as soon as our eggs in the melon bed hatch (as they may tomorrow), our children will need room and quiet” (pg.12-13). This sustains that Nagaina is a weakling because Nagaina tells Nag to kill the family instead of fighting Rikki-tikki head on. Nagaina is different then Rikki-tikki due to the fact that Rikki-tikki is not afraid of anything for a long amount of time, Nagaina in the end overcomes her fear by fighting Rikki-tikki head on. Another reason that shows that Nagaina is clueless is, “‘Son of the big man that killed Nag,” she hissed, “stay still. I am not ready yet. Wait a little. Keep very still, all you three! If you move, I strike, and if you do not move, I strike. Oh, foolish people, who killed my Nag!” (pg. 17). This proves that Nagaina is clueless because instead of going after Rikki-tikki she goes after the family that Rikki-tikki was taken care by. Nagaina being a weakling and clueless is not the same as Rikki-tikki because Rikki-tikki would have gone straight for the enemy not to its supporters, also Nagania being a weakling and clueless establishes that courage can …show more content…

One piece of personification shown in the text is, “Angry as he was, Rikki-tikki was very frightened as he saw the size of the big cobra” (pg. 13). This is personification because the author describes Rikki-tikki’s emotions as if a human was saying them. Furthermore, this piece of personification shows that courage can overcome your fears because even though Rikki-tikki was afraid he still fought and won. Another piece of personification shown in the text is, “Chuchundra sat down and cried till the tears rolled off his whiskers. “I am a very poor man,” he sobbed. “I never had spirit enough to run out into the middle of the room” (pg. 12). This is personification because the author gives Chuchundra a human cry for emotional reasons; animals don’t do that. Furthermore, this piece of personification shows that courage can overcome your fears because Chuchundra was afraid that Nag and Nagaina might be mistaken for Rikki-tikki that, Rikki-tikki was not going to let that happen. Personification was used in this story to give human qualities to
