As the years have passed, art has revolutionized. The two paintings Birth of the Virgin by Pietro Lorenzetti and Birth of the Virgin by Domenico Ghirlandaio are an example of how both artists illustrate the same scene in different time periods. Lorenzetti`s art piece takes place during late medieval Italy and was completed in 1342. It was created for the altar of Saint Savinus in the Siena Cathedral in Italy and was painted as a tempera on wood on a three-piece panel. While Ghirlandaio`s takes place during the renaissance in Quattrocento Italy and was completed from 1845- 1490. It was painted in Cappella Maggiore, Santa Maria Novella, Florence, Italy as a fresco. Overall, both art pieces share differences but express similar perspectives on this symbolic religious event.

Saint Anne is illustrated in the middle of the painting as she is reclining back watching the midwives who are washing her daughter Mary. Mary is also illustrated with a halo however, Saint Anne is seen to be the focus in the painting. On the right side, we see women who are bringing gifts to congratulate the birth of the child.
Domenico Ghirlandaio illustrates Saint Anne reclining on the bed as the midwives are preparing to bath the newborn child Mary. The midwife pouring the water seems to be moving fast as her skirt and scarf are illustrated to be moving fast like the wind. This represents a change in the style of painting as it helps the audience imagine just how fast this event was happening. The illustration of a window also brings light into the room making the painting seem brighter. The room is also seen to be luxurious and the women are seen to be lined up to greet the newborn
