How Is Television Affecting American Culture

The television was once thought of as a wonderful invention. Time is proving that this invention is not living up to this grand idea. Since its invention in 1923, television is leaving a legacy of broken promises and failed expectations. Unfortunately, the most innocent in the American culture, the children have become the victims of this disappointment. The saddest part is that they are unaware of this impact until it’s too late. They do not realize the tragic consequences that await their adult lives. Television has had a detrimental, negative effect on the entire American culture. Former Federal Communications Commission commissioner, Nicholas Johnson once said, “All television is educational television. The question is: what is it teaching?” (Terri Guillemets, 2014). Television has manipulated the American culture into thinking that it has something educational to offer. If children, on average, are spending 25 hours a week watching television, there should be less failing school systems and better-educated children (Parents Television Council, 2014). The desensitization from violence and dangerous activity has influenced children and youth to imitate the behaviors they see on television. The American Psychology Association says that their research has shown that children who view violent television programs are more likely to lack self-control, be disrespectful to authority, act out on playmates and argue with adults (Parents Television Council, 2014). Clearly, the aggression and behavior children (youth) view on television effects their behavior and choices. This should make parents more careful but as already stated, children are watching an average of 25 hours of television per week. This does not include video games or other
