Being the main character in Homer’s The Odyssey, Odysseus portrays many different character traits: some good, some not so good. Brave, cunning, intelligent, and unfaithful to name just a few. Throughout the story, Odysseus has his good and bad moments. Personally, I think more good moments than bad. What exactly has Odysseus done to earn such adjectives to describe himself? Let us analyze more to find out!
Let’s start off with the character trait “Brave”. The definition of brave is defined as:” ready to face/endure danger or pain; having courage”. To me, that description summarizes Odysseus perfectly. So, how exactly is he brave? Well, for starters he showed great courage …show more content…

Remember now, to give me the gift just as you promised. Noman is my name, they call me Noman, my mother, my father, and all my friends too.” (Book 9: lines 360-365) Polyphemus fell asleep. Odysseus took an olivewood stake and stabbed him in his eye. The Cyclops was shouting “Noman is killing me!” (Book 9: line 407) The other Cyclops thought his pain was being inflicted by Zeus and continued on with their business. If Odysseus was not tremendously brave, how could he have pulled off a stunt like that.
Now that we have discussed a bit on his bravery, now we can talk about how Odysseus is cunning. The third line in book one calls Odysseus cunning, but how so? Well going back to what we talked about before about how he outsmarted Polyphemus and used his own strength against him. Also, with the use of magic, he was able to defeat Circe. When Circe turned his men into pigs, he convinced her to turn them back into men. (Book 10: lines 413-420) Odysseus is also very strategic. He disguised himself as an old man so the suitors wouldn’t recognize him (Books 17-18). With the element of surprise, he defeated all of them and returned to his pre-war life with Penelope who took him back, with no questions asked (which is extremely annoying, but we will get into that later).
