The Great Gatsby by F.Scott Fitzgerald portrays the tragic effects that materialism can have.In The Great Gatsby , Fitzgerald uses the characters of Tom, Daisy, and Gatsby to show how dehumanizing and detrimental materialism can be. Tom and Daisy are very wealthy and live a nonchalant lifestyle. They are not in love with each other and are unhappy; however, they do not leave each other because they need to “play their part in society”. Daisy and Tom often behave in inhumane ways; Apathetic after taking Myrtle’s life, Daisy lets Gatsby take the blame, and Tom and Daisy indirectly cause Gatsby’s death.
