Music is a big part of every distinct culture, and over the years music has changed and developed in so many ways to be what we hear in today’s society. Music plays such an important role in traditional and nontraditional aspects of every single persons life. There is not one day that goes by where we do not hear a rhythm, a beat, or a melody. As we get older, knowing this history of how music was established over the years is an important base in understanding culture from around the world.

The first period that music can physically date back to is in Europe from 450-1450 AD, known as the Medieval Era when gregorian chant and monophony thrived. After the Roman Empire has collapsed, Western Europe went into a frenzy and fell into "The Dark Ages” what is also commonly called the Medieval Era. During this time the church was able to keep masses continuously practicing faith by involving what is called gregorian chant. Gregorian chant was monophonic, sacred music that was performed only in church as it was divine and from God himself, so not a single person was allowed to be credited. The Medieval period was sacred music in a monophonic chant. Evolving into Renaissance music that became more humanism and secular with the use of text painting, imitative polyphony and Cantus Frimus in polyphony. Which was built on in the Baroque time period, where there was a rise in the middle class, opera’s, and the birth of the organ. The progression of these time periods allowed me to have a greater appreciation for the different fundamentals of music, and allows me to hear the different rhythms, dynamics, and forms of music that is currently played. It has also allowed me to make connections between the culture that was established in North America and how it developed into the nuances of todays
