In the book 1984 the character Orwell shows that Winston is always being watched by a device called the “Telescreen”. This Telescreen is a TV that you can watch but at the same time it is always watching you and can hear everything you do in Orwell’s book. However In today’s world we don’t have telescreens, we have cellphones, laptops, and traffic cameras. These are only some of the things that our government can watch us through without asking for our permission. Even though some people argue that we have to lose some privacy in order to be safe, but who makes the line that shouldn’t be crossed between privacy and safety? Winston and the girl that he loves Julia can and are being watched and heard at all times, during their meetings, at their apartments, and even at work. The same thing applies in today’s world even though there are no telescreens, but never forget there are cellphones and the government can accuses them as they wish and same thing goes for social media. Just like in the book we all have to face our fears and it will either change us or make our beliefs stronger, Winston wasn’t so lucky he ended up losing all his self-respect when he gave up his humanity. But as Abraham Lincoln said “Government of the people, by the people, for the people shall not parish from the earth” and that is what we have In this day and age we can stop “big brother” from becoming a weapon that is used against us all we have to do is control it.
