A person’s reputation affects how people see them without even talking to that person. If someone has a good reputation they are more likely to be trusted, versus if they have a bad reputation someone is more likely to hesitate before trusting that person. For example, would someone trust a painter to paint your house when that painter has the reputation for not finishing his work and doing a bad job? Or would that person leave your kids with a baby sitter that is known for falling asleep on the job? Rebecca is accused of witchcraft with no probable cause. Elizabeth and Proctor think that if she has a very good reputation, she will be saved, but nothing is for sure as everyone is running around like a dog with out a chain. Reverend Hale does this by saying that the times are strange, but this really doesn’t help anyone. He does this by stating “This is a strange time, Mister.
