Upon reading Coming of Age in Mississippi by Anne Moody, in my honest opinion I thought the book would be boring, I am happy to say that I was wrong. This memoir about Anne’s life was really interesting and inspiring. Throughout Anne’s memoir I read about all the discrimination that went on in her life, the constant change that kept happening, with the death in the family her father leaving and marrying someone else and all the half siblings she had. Through all that Anne still wanted to make a difference despite the odds and all the negativity and lack of support from her family. Smelcer, my high school history teacher. My teacher dedicated a whole month of class on the topic of “Black Lives Matter.” She loved to read books on opinions on black society. I think this book would fascinate her if she has not already read it. She always taught us about the struggles of African Americans, but never about the privilege that some of them had. Some African Americans were better off than most whites at the time. They were doctors and lawyers, most of the black elite were making salaries close to middle class Caucasians. The book shows how not only how whites look down on the African American racial background, but so did people of their own race. I think this simple fact would be intriguing to my teacher and maybe challenge her views on black society. It could also contribute to her lessons in class, teaching high schoolers about this exclusive society. Lastly, I would recommend this book to Mrs. Smelcer because it proves that while the members of the black elite had “privilege and plenty” they were still racial discriminated against by whites, even through they should have been

One of the books I both learned from and enjoyed was The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas. I enjoyed this book because of Thomas’s fearlessness in addressing common occurrences of racism in the United States today, including police brutality against minorities. In fact, Thomas wrote this novel because of cases such as Michael Brown. Despite the focus on police brutality, this book was not anti-police, which Thomas portrays through the fact that Starr Carter, the protagonist, has an uncle--whom she is closer to than her own father--that is a police officer, which is an important part of the characters’ lives. The author Mark Twain does an incredible job using satire to mock beliefs and social institutions. In Huckleberry Finn Twain portrays his beliefs on social issues through Huck, who is an innocent unbiased child. Since Huck was born from nothing, and had nothing he speaks the truth on social issues such as slavery, religion, and greed. Unlike many of the people surrounding Huck, he is the one of the only characters Twain can speak through. In Huckleberry Finn, Twain uses satire to discuss greed, hypocrisy, and personal beliefs.

Kathryn Stockett is one of the most powerful, courageous, and bravest writers I have ever read about and that is why I have chosen to write about her. I read her book "The Help" and by reading this book it has shown me many things about history I had not known existed. This book is all about African American housekeepers in the 1960's and how they were treated, even though the laws may have made them equal, society did not. If it wasn't for books like this people like me may not know about these rough times and how life has changed drastically since then. Reasons like these are why I was inspired to write this paper about Stockett.

The movie I chose to review was The Help. The Help takes place in the 1960s in Jackson, Mississippi. The movie focuses on the lives of two African-American maids, Aibileen Clark and Minny Jackson. Aibileen worked for a family who had a young girl that she helped to raise. The other maid, Minny, got fired from the first house we saw her working in because she used the homeowners’ bathroom without their permission. She ends up finding work with Celia Foote, who is not very popular among the other women in the town. After Minny found out Celia was having complications with her pregnancy, the two became very close. Celia even spent a whole night cooking a meal for Minny.

The book that I have read is entitled “The Help” as it shows the hardships African American individuals went through back in the day.
