The Agents of Socialization’s Influence on Me
As I have learned in sociology, the people around me have influenced me much more than I give them credit for. According to Macionis, socialization, as a process everyone goes through, is the lifelong social experience by which people develop their human potential and learn culture (75). In class lecture, Professor Williams defined socialization as the process of learning and internalizing culture and structure. Socialization has four agents, including family, school, peer groups, and mass media. Each agent of socialization plays some part in everyone’s life. In my life, family, school, and peer groups influenced me the most due to the fact that I had little access to mass media.

I did not really watch the news for I knew that I would get the information that I needed from my parents, friends, or teachers. I did not care for social media since my parents did not allow me to get any social media. YouTube was the first form of media that I showed interest in. With YouTube, I expanded the genres of music that I listened to and introduced me to a new source of entertainment and different views. Later on in middle school, I learned about Instagram. One of my friends forced me to make one, but I almost never went on it before I finally deleted it three years later. In high school, the most influential mass media that I was shown was Facebook. I became addicted. I watched numerous inspirational speeches, short films, and DIY videos. I also read countless articles about a variety of topics from sweet stories of family to true stories of creepy hidden rooms. The articles and the videos that I found on media distracted me from school and led me to procrastinate a lot. Luckily, I maintained my grades.
