How Does Shakespeare Present Ophelia's Relationship

In Hamlet by William Shakespeare, Ophelia is a young woman of noble birth. She was raised in the royal court alongside her brother, Laertes, and Hamlet, the Prince of Denmark. This would lead the readers and audience member to believe that Ophelia has a close relationship with these boys. Ideally they would understand her better than anyone else, because they would have spent so much time together because the three of them were the only children in the castle. As in most cases, when you get older you would become friends or at least close to the adults in your life. Ophelia is shown to be close to her father and willing to do whatever it takes to be a good daughter. In Act two, scene one Ophelia explains that she did as her father told her when Hamlet came to her, “...did as you command I did repel his letters and denied his access to me” (2.1.109-111). …show more content…

Many of the characters during the play express love for Ophelia. Such as Gertrude at Ophelia’s funeral, “I hoped thou shouldst have been my Hamlet’s wife. I thought they bride-bed to have decked, sweet maid, and not t’have strewn they grave” (5.1.228-229). She is a dutiful daughter and citizen and loves Hamlet dearly. However she is a member of a complex family and society where she is constantly striving to fulfill other peoples expectations of her. Every relationship that Ophelia has during this play is not purely out of love. Everyone is manipulating her and there is not a relationship that does not abuse Ophelia’s determination to fulfill her societal roles. This breakdown of relationships leads to the eventual breakdown of Ophelia. As she attempts to do as she is asked, she slowly looses the people she loves and then loses
