How Does Oedipus Lose His Fate

Back in the ancient Greek times the gods were dictators. The fact that human race was going to die upset them and made them jealous because they wanted everything including the ability to die. In “Oedipus The King” by Sophocles, Oedipus was born in royalty and had his whole life mapped out by his parents until the god Apollo decided to put fate in his own hands by telling Oedipus’s parents a prophecy that would only be filled by Apollo’s own doing out of pure jealousy. However, Oedipus saw himself as being a golden child he thinks the gods are on his side, but he is actually being targeted for destruction. He is a confident man by the way he presents himself to people in the kingdom. Unfortunately, he cannot control his fate and has no power over his future. Oedipus tries to escape the destiny the oracle prophesized. He leaves Corinth because he is scared the prophecy will become true. Oedipus only being a newborn when given away by his parents means that he did not have an intellect of the prophecy that was foretold. He …show more content…

“You came and by your coming saved our city, freed us from the tribute which we paid of old to the sphinx, cruel singer. This you did in virtue of no knowledge we could give you, in virtue of no teaching; it was god that aided you, men say, and you are held with god’s assistance to have saved our lives” (Mays. Sophocles. Lines 39-45). After many had tried to free the city of the plague by solving the riddle, Oedipus is the man who does it. In the story it tells how Oedipus has no knowledge of the riddle and it was god who aided him through it. This was a twisted act by Apollo to tempt Oedipus into saving Thebes and becoming the king so that he would marry the queen who was actually his mother. In doing this Oedipus completed the prophecy with the helping hand of Apollo
