In Nathaniel Hawthorne’s, “The Scarlet Letter”, his use of symbolism, infantile, diction, and misleading details characterize Arthur Dimmesdale and his relationship with Hester Prynne. Hawthorne uses symbolism to reveal the characterization of Arthur Dimmesdale. In chapter three, it says “ (Dimmesdale) with his hand upon his heart”. This gesture can be used to symbolize an illness. In Puritan society, illness was thought to be caused by committing a sin. When Dimmesdale shows himself with his hand over his heart, it represents a deeper illness that has manifested itself inside him. Another example of symbolism in regards to Dimmesdale in chapter three, where it says, “Affected them like the speech of an angel”. An angel represents a figure of holiness and purity. This can be seen by his status of public standard as he is the reverend. He is supposed to be a role model and someone to look to for spiritual guidance. However, this is inaccurate as the reader finds that he is corrupt. He has broken two commandments by not only having premarital sex, but also committing adultery. However, he is unable to repent and confess out of fear of losing his social status. Not only that, but he would also be excommunicated from the church, and even hanged. This angel philosophy prevents him from being able to make mistakes, even though he is as human as the rest of his congregation. The puritan doctrine created a fence around him and forces him to follow it, even though it causes him to not be able to stand next to the mother of his child and his own child.
