Macbeth is the story of a courageous and noble general whose ambitions to be king of Scotland led him down a path of doom and destruction that he cannot escape. Macbeth is first shown as a great soldier that is admired by all. “For brave Macbeth (well he deserves that name), Disdaining Fortune, with his brandished steel, Which smoked with bloody execution, Like Valor’s minion, carved out his passage Till he faced the slave; Which ne’er shook hands, nor bade farewell to him, Till he unseamed him from the nave to th’ chops, And fixed his head upon our battlements” (I.ii.18-25). Banquo and Macbeth are surprised by the greetings from the three witches, “All hail, Macbeth! Hail to thee, Thane of Glamis! All hail, Macbeth! Hail to thee, Thane of Cawdor! All hail, Macbeth, that shalt be king hereafter” (I.iii.51-53)! Both of them do not understand all the witches and how they can see into the future. Ross and Angus, noblemen, come to tell Macbeth that the king wishes him to now be rewarded. “He bade me, from him, call thee Thane of Cawdor” (I.ii.110). Macbeth now believes the witches because he is Thane of Glamis, Thane of Cawdor and maybe if witches are really truthful, he will be king! Now Macbeth is under the spell of power and ambition and thinks of murdering Duncan. “My thought, whose murder yet is but fantastical, Shakes so my single state of man That function is smothered in surmise, And nothing is but what is not” (I.iii.152-155). Macbeth and Lady Macbeth plot to kill Duncan so Macbeth can be king, “I am settled and bend up Each corporal agent to this terrible feat. Away, and mock the time with fairest show. False face must hide what the false heart doth know” (II.vii.92-96). He will put on a false face and nothing will stop him from killing Duncan. He is the only one blocking Macbeth from becoming king.
