Sir Lancelot is a complex character to say the least, he was one of the greatest knights of the round table, a faithful lover, but also a traitor. With all that in mind to answer the question; does Lancelot deserve to be a knight of the round table?, I have to say no. There are many aspects of his character I had to analyze to answer this question, one was did he live up to the code of chivalry, the second being what was his greatest flaw, and the final one is what is the overall result of his knightlyness. The answers to these questions are contradictory because lancelot did many great things but his last action was big enough to undo all of his good deeds. Lancelot was blinded by his love for Guinevere he didn’t see or at least he didn’t care what the result of this affair would be. He knew Guinevere was married and perhaps this wouldn’t have mattered if she wasn’t King Arthur’s wife but she was and yet Lancelot still pursued her. Lancelot knew that by doing this he would never be forgiven and would result in a war because he would be a traitor, yet he still did it. When Lancelot betrayed Arthur and ran away with Guinevere Arthur found out, of course and needless to say Arthur went after them. This caused the round table to be broken because it can’t be the 12 knights of the round table with only 11 knights but more importantly it broke the trust and brotherhood they had. When Arthur had gone after them he was betrayed again by his nephew Mordred and eventually found himself at war and although Arthur wasn’t at war with Lancelot he perhaps wouldn’t have gone to war in the first place if Lancelot didn’t take Guinevere. In this war with Mordred Arthur was killed, ending his reign and ultimately the end of camelot which was described as being the perfect kingdom.
