Dramatic Change in Lady Macbeth’s Character During the time of Shakespeare, women were regarded as the weaker sex. They were thought not to be as smart or equal to men. Lady Macbeth serves as the main influence in Macbeth’s life (123helpme.com). In the play, Macbeth, Lady Macbeth is a very significant character. She is shown as a very strong and independent woman. Lady Macbeth changes her character dramatically. She changes from a manipulative, deceitful, ambitious woman to a woman who starts to despair and ends up dying because of the guilt she had after murdering King Duncan. Lady Macbeth is found really disturbed and guilty over her dirty deeds. She becomes vulnerable and lets her guilt overrule her. While sleepwalking, Lady Macbeth says the following words “ Out, damned spot! Out, I say”...( 5. 1. 25)! This quote shows the guilt and unseen emotions of Lady Macbeth. She changes from a mastermind into a guilt ridden woman. Lady Macbeth’s guilt made her extremely self-conscious because she thought that someone would find out. It tells us how Lady Macbeth cannot get the blood of Duncan off her hands. The guilt brought upon Lady Macbeth by these bad deeds did more harm to her than what she expected. She may have achieved her ambition, but the price she has paid is far higher than she imagined. She is willing to do anything to get it. On the night that Macbeth and lady macbeth have planned to kill Duncan. Lady Macbeth is an extremely ambitious woman and wants more than anything for her husband, Macbeth, to be the next King of Scotland. When King Duncan announces that his son, Malcolm, is to be the next King, Duncan’s murder is planned. Lady Macbeth’s crucial role in the play is to persuade Macbeth to carry out the murder of Duncan. In the beginning she is ambitious, controlling and strong. However as the plot concludes there is an extreme change in her character and personality which surprises the audience. Lady Macbeth’s guilt eventually becomes too much for her to handle which leads to her death.
Initially, when her character is introduced, she displays her masculine traits with complete disregard for any form of femininity. In this, Lady Macbeth sheds any attachment she has to her natural embodiment as a woman, and asks the supernatural to help her in her quest to power. It is clearly shown that Lady Macbeth yearns to achieve ambitions that weren’t considered womanly in the time period that this play is set in. As a consequence, she pushes her husband to fulfill her horrendous dreams, because she knows that she will not be affected if Macbeth fails to execute his plans. If Macbeth gets caught, then she remains blameless, and if he doesn’t, she becomes a queen. Either way she doesn’t get hurt. Nonetheless, Lady Macbeth hides another aspiration, one which is evidenced from her humane actions. As a loyal companion to Macbeth, Lady Macbeth wants to ensure that her husband achieves his dream, to be king, at any cost, even if that means sacrificing her femininity and humanity. Power is addictive like a drug, typically, people would do anything to gain it, even if they had to murder someone. Shakespeare viewed his women as strong-willed individuals (“Macbeth.” 227 ) when in reality they were often gone unrecognized (Women in Anglo). The character, Lady Macbeth, was a frightening, ambitious woman. Lady Macbeth often wished to “unsex herself” to carry out the killing of King Duncan on her own as her husband showed no manly characteristics to do it. Women during the Anglo-Saxon time period however, were way different then the way Shakespeare viewed his women during his time period.

In saying this, Lady Macbeth is a clear example of how the traditional characteristics of a woman are non-existent as they are taken over by masculinity and strength. The witches challenge their womanhood due to the power they hold and attributes they have, all while Macbeth challenges his gender as he shows femininity through weakness and fretfulness.
