In The Taming of the Shrew, Katharina, or Kate, transforms from a shrewish woman to an obedient wife to Petruchio while still maintaining her aggressive attitude. Katharina was undesirable to many men due to her abusive and obnoxious actions. At this time, most women were submissive and did not have the same temperament that Katharina did. Along with this, men often took more interest in her younger sister, Bianca, as she was much more attractive and was a submissive woman like many other women at this time. Although this is true, Petruchio still finds a way to look past this and find a wife in Katharina as he is a bachelor and she has wealth. Essentially Kate is the same person throughout the entire play however has now learned to be compassionate and love others thus showing a change in character. While she still is able to retain her shrewish attitude, she is submissive and loves Petruchio. Throughout the play it is clear that Kate strongly desires love and compassion toward herself although she does not give it unto others. Kate has jealousy toward Bianca as Bianca is a more desirable woman to men, including their father. She is submissive, younger, and much more attractive than Kate and this causes Kate to lash out. In Act 1, Scene 1, Kate resorts to poking herself in the eye to make it seem as if she’s crying as she desired attention from her father. Kate says “Put finger in the eye, an she knew why” (1.1.79) implying that this is a common occurrence in a desperate resort to get compassion from her father. Later on in Act 2, Scene 1, Kate
