In A Farewell to Arms, Hemingway uses the element of weather to represent overarching themes of the novel, as well to portray emotions within the characters. The novel begins in a warm and dry climate, changing to wet and muddy as Frederic's realization of war become more real. Rain and gloomy weather are present in numerous events throughout the novel, serving as a constant reminder of death and misfortune. For each scene rain is present, the characters find them self in a situation surrounded by the reality of war and death. The change in season throughout the novel serves to foreshadow future events as well to reflect Frederic's changing as a character as his realization for war evolves. The narrator describes protruding rocks in the river “dry and white in the sun” (3) still untouched by the rain as the “water was clear and swiftly moving and blue in the channels” (3) both to symbolize the momentary peaceful environment in which Frederic resides. At this point, Frederic has signed up to be an ambulance driver in World War 1. Although brave, Frederic has has not yet experienced the realities that come with being part of the war. Frederic views artillery flashes in the distance that are described as “summer lighting” (3) rather then actual threat. The violence still being far-off, Frederic reacts to it just as someone would to a summer storm, with no serious action. The noticeable change in weather, brewing in from over the mountains is a foreshadow of the war that is to impact Frederic and many more soldiers. As the fighting grows closer, the land
