How Does Dewey's Character Change Throughout The Play

The adult characters had many costume changes to show the development throughout the play. One character’s costume changes that reflected the obvious developing personality was Rosalie, the principal of Horace Green school. In the professional environment, Rosalie dressed up in dark-colored clothing such as grey, blue and black with her blouse, pencil skirt, and jacket. Like the children’s school uniforms, the lines on her clothes are straight and tight which shows her small form. Furthermore, the texture of her outfits is smooth with little to no wrinkles. This expresses Rosalie’s position and authority in the school as she enforces the rules and student conduct. There are two moments when Rosalie’s true personality shines in the play. In the beginning of the play, Dewey was dressed up in a black t-shirt and dark sweatpants which the lines on the clothes indicated many wrinkles, making the clothing baggy. This expresses Dewey’s wild personality. When Dewey portrays himself as a teacher in the first act, he starts to wear vests and work shirts in which blends in with the colors of the school setting (brown, green, and yellow) with black jeans in which have some straight lines to show professionalism; however, Dewey’s outfit is still baggy with his large shape and an uneven texture throughout with all the wrinkles. This shows how Dewey hasn’t learned how to behave in a professional work environment in act one. In act two; however, Dewey starts to adjust to the professional school environment when he wears the full brown suit with a brown jacket and pants in which have straight lines and fewer wrinkles. At the end of the shows, Dewey wears a school uniform like the students with a burgundy vest and striped pants that have straight lines and a smooth texture which fits over his heavy body shape.
