In the novel To Kill a Mocking Bird, courage can be seen in everyday life. Courage means strength in the face of pain or grief, as well as the ability to do something that frightens one. In the novel To Kill a Mockingbird, the characters of Boo, Atticus, and Scout display courage throughout the novel. Boo Radley displays courage by overcoming his shyness and bonding with the Finch children. In chapter seven Boo goes against his father’s wishes and tries to communicate with the finch children by placing trinkets in the children’s special tree. “We were walking past our tree. Atticus displays courage by accepting the case of Tom Robinson stating, “I’m simply defending a Negro-his name’s Tom Robinson” (100). He does so knowing he would upset the town and put him and his family in danger. However, the reader knows he is more than capable of facing down fear to protect his family as seen when he shoots the rabid dog. “The rifle cracked. Tim Johnson leaped, flopped over and crumpled on the sidewalk in a brown-and-white heap. He didn’t know what hit him” (127).
