Albert Camus’ The Stranger is the story of apathetic Meursault’s journey to self-discovery while on death row. Throughout the novel, Camus utilizes personification of the sun to display his narrator’s gradual evolution towards deciding to experience emotion. As he is pressured by those around him to display grief over the death of his mother, love for his girlfriend, and remorse for the gruesome murder, the sun becomes an aggressive force that has a physical effect on him. Gradually, as those around him begin to disappear, the sun becomes a soft force, driving anxiety and discomfort rather than searing pain. Instead of the suppression of emotions as seen with Maman’s funeral or rage displayed throughout the murder, the sun begins to personify anxiety. When first entering the courtroom, Meursault states that, “despite the blinds, the sun filtered through in places and the air was already stifling,” (83) and that between the sun and the people filling the room, he felt dizzy. However, it is not the sun causing him to feel these emotions, but the judgement he can feel radiating off of everyone in the courtroom. It is not filled simply with journalists or jurors, but with Meursault’s own acquaintances. Through his refusal to acknowledge his own wrongdoing and repent emotionally for his crime, the onlookers swiftly abandon all hope of him expressing any form of emotion. As the trial gradually evolves from being about the murder to Meursault’s morality, he retreats further into himself, showing no emotion when the prosecutor inquires as to his reaction to Maman’s death. In refusing to repent for his crime, both the murder and lack of emotion towards his mother, Meursault is sentenced to death.
