According to scholars, Vasubandhu is one of the most influential figures in the entire history of Buddhism. Throughout Vasubandhu’s life he has developed to be a significant person and great influence to Buddhists and Buddhism for abounding reasons.

Pure Land Buddhism
Vasubandhu is a guiding patriarch in both Zen Buddhism (21st patriarch) and the Jodo Shinshu branch of Buddhism (2nd patriarch). He has achieved a number of far-reaching accomplishments that have constrained Buddhist communities together. One important fulfilment is his contribution in the development of Pure Land Buddhism. Since Vasubandhu is a patriarch he played a great role in the unfolding of this practiced tradition.

Pure Land Buddhism is a broad range of Mahayana Buddhism and one of the most widely practiced traditions of Buddhism in East Asia. It is specifically designed for ‘lazy people’ and is sometimes called the Easy Path, as it only requires the simple act of faith and recitation of the Nembutsu (Amitabha Budda). This includes detailed commentaries on many Mahayana texts, works on logic, devotional poetry, works on Abhidharma classification as well as original and innovative philosophical treatises. Vasubandhu also wrote a number of commentaries on Buddhist scriptures, primarily those that are classified as Mahayana sutras. He also wrote a tremendously influential work on how to interpret and teach Buddhist scriptures, entitled the ‘proper mode of Exposition (Vjakhayukti).
