World War I was a magnificent war. It originally began as a result of the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand, who was next in line to the Austro-Hungarian Empire in 1914. World War I began July 28, 1914 and ended November 11, 1918. The United States president at the time was president Woodrow Wilson. The U.S. declared war later on Germany in 1917 due to the sinking of the Lusitania, a British cruise ship with Americans on board. The U.S. had many alliances with different countries such as France, Great Britain, and Russia. Towards the end of World War I, many soldiers, civilians, and important people have died. Around 21 million soldiers were wounded and 10 million were killed. Deaths only in the U.S. totaled to around 116,000 civilians and soldiers. A treaty was made to end World War I called the Treaty of Versailles. It ended warfare with Germany and Allied Powers, which were Great Britain, France, and Italy. They fought together during the First World War. President Woodrow Wilson was elected so he could prevent the United States of entering war and staying neutral. Americans mainly saw the First World War as problems for other countries and not America. Because Germany sunk the Lusitania, over 1,150 innocent passengers were killed, including Americans. In early 1917, the British ambushed a secret telegram that was sent from the German Foreign Secretary, Arthur Zimmerman that was given to the German consul in Mexico. The telegram guaranteed Mexico the territories of Texas, Arizona, and New Mexico. Once President Woodrow Wilson found out about the secret telegram, he gave a speech to Congress on April 2, 1917 announcing war on Germany.
