Over the course of American History the differences in the economies of the North and the South caused tension to arise. The North’s economy depended on manufacturing goods and trade. The South’s economy depended on farming and slavery. As the Union’s territory grew tensions arose over what states would have slavery and what states would be “free.” Many people in the North didn't agree with the idea of slavery and did things like held conference or write books to spread their opinion. Many acts and laws will try to resolve the conflict between the North and the South but the only thing that will resolve it will be a war.

The North was seen as a safe haven to slaves but an economic hard ship to the South. Slaves were trying to escaping slavery and running to the North. Immediately the south saw the issue and passed the Fugitive Slave Act to stop the slaves from leaving. The North did not approve of the law because southern kidnappers were coming and taking African Americans who were free. This angered the north and cause the idea of abolishing slavery to spread. Uncle Toms cabin was written by a white women to show people how slaves were actually treated. It caused sympathy toward slaves and it angered the North.
They decided to give the people the right to decide. However they were not regulating wether or not a voter was from the state. People from all over came to vote to try and turn the polls toward their opinion. Many proslavery and abolitionist came to Kansas to vote. Conflict arose between the two and a battle began. John Brown was an abolitionist who came to Kansas to fight against the southerners. He killed many but was executed. The North seen him as a martyr but the South seen him more as a murderer. This caused the two regions to turn on one
