The Renaissance known as the rebirth, began in the late 1300’s and lasted all the way through the 1500’s. The people who are known for beginning the Renaissance were trying to recreate the classical models of Ancient Greek and Rome. There were many things that led to the Renaissance including the Dark ages that took place in 500 AD to 1500 AD and the Crusades that lasted about 200 years.
The dark ages, a time of chaos in Europe devastated Europe's population, creating fear and panic among citizens and severely depleted the workforce. No thanks to The Bubonic plague in 1347 Europe lost about 25 million people. Though the Bubonic plague, better knows as The Black Death, wiped out much of the population things began to settle down. The holy land, as you can see in the photograph below is located in Jerusalem in an area roughly located between the Jordan River and the Mediterranean Sea. These series of wars are a way that a powerful pope could protect their holy lands from the Muslims conquest to take it. Unfortunately “despite the effort, pope could never have persuaded the Western peoples to arm themselves for the conquest of the Holy Land”. As a result the Byzantine army returned to the city without a fight. Soon many Crusaders traveled to the Middle East on ships by paying a large profit to the Italians who soon had many cities such as “Florence and Venice that became rich from banking and foreign trade.”() The wealth that these Italian cities gained soon helped them grow into powerful city-states. These series of wars resulted in a rush of goods, wealth and knowledge into Western Europe from the Byzantine Empire and the Muslim world. The Renaissance started as a cultural movement in Italy and later spread to the rest of Europe beginning the early Modern Age! As a result of the crusades we got a expand of knowledge that soon led to a change in our arts. Art being a important factor that came from this period, gave us many new advancements in painting, sculpture and decorative arts. After a long period of cultural decline and lack of development the Renaissance was a time of cultural learning and wisdom. In the picture to the left, there is a painting of Mona Lisa painted by Leonardo Da Vinci. Leonardo Da Vinci was one of many painters that influenced modern day art, along with Raphael Sanzio and Sandro Botticelli.
