Both the Crusades and the Black Death had significant impacts on medieval Europe and Western Civilization. They both caused havoc and crisis during the Middle Ages. When studying the Middle Ages, the Black Death had the greatest impact on Western Civilization when compared to the Crusades. The Crusades were very important for Western Civilization. They demonstrated the increasing power of the papacy, while also showing the expansiveness of the West (Sherman 124). All of the crusades made up a series of religious battles between Muslims and Christians who both sought to control the holy sites that they considered to be sacred. Though the Europeans were defeated, the Crusades ultimately led to the further expansion of Christianity. The Black Death was a terrible plague that not only hit Medieval Europe, but also Asia and North Africa (Spielvogel 300). The plague is known as one of the most devastating natural disasters to ever occur in Europe. Bubonic plague, one of the least toxic forms of the illness, killed 60 percent of those who were infected, making the total number of fatalities to be incredibly high (Spielvogel 301).
