Many colored people back in the 1960’s wanted change in segregation. In their protests they were peaceful and would not cause any conflict that would induce violence. During the 1960’s the tension between people trying to protest segregation and the people who wanted to keep segregation laws were very high. People who protested segregation were Rosa Parks, Martin Luther King Jr, Mamie Till and many more. Rosa Parks was one of those many people who protested and brought change to injustice against African Americans. In the text it says “Three riders complied. Parks did not…’Are you going to stand up’ the driver demanded. Rosa Parks looked straight at him and said: ‘No.’... ‘Well I’m going to have you arrested’ Parks replied ‘You may do that.’” This shows how involved Parks was and how calm she was in her peaceful protest. This also demonstrates how Parks believed so strongly in her cause she was willing to be arrested. In the text it says, “When Mamie Till found about the murder, she insisted that the body be sent back to Chicago immediately, whatever the cost. When she saw Emmett’s mutilated face and body, she also insisted they hold an open-casket funeral, so everyone could see the worst effects of racism in the U.S.” Mamie was devastated but knew the public needed to see the effects of racism to make change.
