What is the reason behind Pip's change? Is the money makes people forget about their families and friends? Or when people love somebody are they will sacrifice of all their families and friends just for the one that they love? Did the character Pip do these choices? The story of Charles Dickens' Great Expectations is about Pip who's an orphan that lives with his sister Mrs. Joe Gargery and her husband Mr. Joe Gargery the blacksmith. The novel shows Pip as the main character who has great expectations that he want to achieve, but these expectations make Pip another person. There are minor differences in the movie, but these differences do not change the main concept of the story. So, this research will study only the similarities between the movie and the novel to analyze Pip's change and the reason behind it. This scholarship will use other resources to support this study. This paper will present five stages to analyze Pip's character which are: First, this study will show briefly the author's life from birth to death. Moreover, it will explain the relation between him and his novel Great Expectations. Grahame Smith claims that Dickens play out the inside battle in his own particular soul, or inner life, through the story of Pip (150). This statement shows that Dickens puts some of his personality in the novel. Furthermore, this paper will present some of Dickens' other works. Second, the research will display a plot summary of the novel with more details. Also it will explain the main events of the story. Moreover, this summary will present some of the more important characters. In addition, it will show how Pip gradually changes to an arrogant person.
