During the early 1900’s oil brought along many changes in society to Texas. Some of these social changes had more impact than others. The change with the most impact, document A, will receive 30 minutes of airtime; document C will receive 20, and document D will receive 10. I made these decisions based on how important and relevant they were to the change of texan life because of oil. In the year 1858 not many choices for higher education or college were available. For texans, there was no option that was in their own state. Due to this, the Texas legislature set aside land grants for Texas’s first university. Once the university had opened people were starting to wonder about the possibilities of oil within their campus. This led to the first major oil discovery in the West Texas Permian Basin. Once the oil money began to flow in it triggered a massive amount of construction to begin in this area. Although this boom didn’t last very long, by 2008 the university had made $4.4 billion dollars due to oil and gas. The oil boom attracted many people including the rich and wealthy. This loss of people at home called for someone to housekeep. This proves that not only did the wildcatters benefit from the oil boom, but everyone had an opportunity to find some sort of wealth from it. In the case of Willsie Lee McKinney, she moved all the way to Texas to reap some sort of benefits from this massive oil boom.
