F. Scott Fitzgerald F. Scott Fitzgerald’s (1896-1940) The Great Gatsby is a novel that takes place in the suburbs of New York during the roaring 20’s. It portrays the story of how two young people fell in and out of love due to conflicting paths and other lovers. In this novel, the wealthy but desperate Jay Gatsby has a multitude of connections to his creator, Fitzgerald. In the book, the visitors at Gatsby’s parties always seem to find themselves talking about how he had gone to a prestigious school in Europe. Similar to Gatsby, Fitzgerald attended an ivy league school, Princeton, but eventually dropped out and enrolled in the military (“Chronology.” 13). Ginevra King was meant to wait for Fitzgerald to come back home to St. Paul, Minnesota from the military, but in 1918, soon after he left, she informed him by letter that she was to be married to another man (“Chronology.” 13). Fitzgerald was devastated by this news; enough to base the characters in two of his books off of this woman that wouldn’t wait for him. This is just one of many events in his life that he took and put into his story writing for other people to view and relate with. Another major theme in The Great Gatsby is that of money, and Fitzgerald has reasoning for writing about the social statuses of Americans in the 1920’s. For Fitzgerald, after moving to New York in 1922, making ends meet was a struggle, as it was to Gatsby when he was trying to win over Daisy’s heart. Gatsby eventually made the money though, just like Fitzgerald. Within 6 months of living in New York, Fitzgerald was able to make $17,000 by writing and publishing 11 stories (“Chronology.” 14). Though he never won back the love of King, he went on to marry another woman, Zelda Sayre, with whom he had one daughter,
