How Did Brooks Influence George Eliot's Life In England

To start the chapter off, Brooks takes a look at the life of a well known author by the name of George Eliot to the rest of the world. as George Eliot woman by the name Mary Anne Evans. A famous author known to the world as George Eliot. To begin, Brooks starts with the background and upbringing of George Eliot. She was born in Warwickshire England back in 1819. Eliot was brought up by her father--a self made successful carpenter--along with her unaffectionate mother. Due to the lack of affection brought on by her mother, Eliot developed this fear of abandonment and grew into this need for validation. In her late teens, Brooks describes her to be this religious nut; she threw herself into this deep devotion towards religious practices and ideals. This lead her to create this facade where she tried to lead this life of martyrdom and surrender. This however wouldn’t last for long. She was greatly influenced by Charles Hennell book An Inquiry Concerning the Origin of Christianity. His book went over the idea that Jesus wasn’t divine, but rather a “noble minded reformer and sage, martyred by crafty priest and brutal soldiers.” Over time, Eliot would find like-minded individuals who believed some of the same ideas she had on Christianity. To be more specific, it was more on the notion that things such as miracles and other unexplainable events in the Bible were more of a mix of fiction in history.
