Adolf Hitler manipulated the German state so he could create his own Totalitarian Government. Germany became desperate due to the Treaty of Versailles that ultimately took away their army, jobs and plummeted their economy. After the Weimar Republic signed the Treaty of Versailles and failed to retain the German economy, Hitler used this to exploit the needs of the German citizens and to manipulate his way into office. Hitler took advantage of three different areas of German society to achieve total control of Germany, the economy, climate of fear and propaganda.

According to BBC, Hitler used his private army, the SS, to secure Germany from internal and external threats. (“Why The Nazi’s Were Able To Stay In Power,” n.d) They targeted people and groups for whom the Nazis believed to be a danger to Germany or its policies. They targeted political opponents, criminals, gypsies, Jews and even some religious figures (“Why The Nazi’s Were Able To Stay In Power,” n.d) The SS was also responsible for the leaking of what the prisoners experienced in the concentration camps, which increased the fear of capture and imprisonment. Later saw the creation and implementation of The SD (Sicherheitsdienst) which was the Nazis private Intelligence service. The SD along with the Gestapo controlled the media and stopped all oppositions towards Hitler before it aired. “In the background, to be sure, there lurked the terror of the Gestapo and the fear of the concentration camp for those who got out of line.” (Shirer, 1960, p. 205) One could argue that the fear of being caught or imprisoned was always in the back of the German populations minds.
