A large population in Essingham are facing homelessness. With around 25% homeless due to domestic violence and family violence. The demographic that has the highest rate of homelessness are aged between 19-24. With a significant increase of 4% from 2015 to 2017. This demographic is severely effected due to the lack of education. Since Essingham is placed in a rural, education and resources essential for learning may be limited. Therefore, this forces adolescence to seek shelter and money urgently in order for survival. To facilitate improvement to the rates of homelessness of adolescences, a successful organisation based in Finland, Y-Foundation has found a solution to decrease the number of homeless people. Key strategies the Y – Foundation has successfully implemented into their campaign was using the House First model through partnerships with municipalities and non-government organisation. (Y-Foundation, 2018) They built, renovated and leased building in towns and cities across Finland in central city locations. This enables the residences to be close to work opportunities and support services. The Housing First is an approach that offers permanent, affordable housing as quickly as possible for individuals and families experiencing homelessness, and then provides the supportive services and connections to the community-based supports people need to keep their housing and avoid returning to homelessness. This is because the costs to fix the issue is significantly high and they are uncertain that the issue can be solved without further expenses. Getting people housed quickly can be a challenge in tight rental markets and in rural areas (Woolley, 2016). Housing First is a beneficial model, however especially not those who are marginalized. This includes people diagnosed with mental illness, people who are active drug users, and people who have a long history of living in poverty (Woolley, 2016). Because of their histories with marginalization, many people need ongoing support to help them retain permanent housing sometimes more than what Housing First programs
