HISTORY OF HORIZON AIR Horizon Air is the eighth largest regional airline in the United States. It is headquartered in Seattle, WA with its main maintenance hub in Portland, OR. Horizon Air was established in May 1981 by entrepreneur Milt Kuolt. The young air carrier sprang to life with its inaugural flight from Yakima to Seattle on September 1, 1981 using one of three Fairchild F-27’s. In June of 1982 Horizon Air purchased Air Oregon and the following year, Transwestern Airlines of Utah in September 1983. This business move eliminated some of the competition through consolidation, expanded its route structure and resulted in reduced operating costs all around. It was a win-win for all three airlines. During the summer of 1984 Horizon started to lease jets; a Douglas DC-9-10 and a Fokker F-28, but it wasn’t until 1985 that Horizon started upgrading their fleet beginning with deHavilland DHC-8-100’s, the short-lived Fairchild Swearingen Metroliner and later the DHC-8-200’s. Horizon was the launch customer for the Dornier 328 and while this aircraft promised fast speeds and comfort, the costs associated with maintaining multiple fleet types proved too costly. Horizon soon settled on the Dash 8 family of aircraft for its fleet and operate DHC-8-400Q aircraft today. Horizon made technological leaps during the 1990’s becoming the first regional air carrier to be granted Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Category IIIa weather minima operations specifications: eventually achieving this capability on five separate make and model aircraft.
