In life many obstacles may appear. Whether it be the death of a loved one, or a bad grade on an important test. No matter how tragic or simple they may seem, all people endure hardships. At times, it might feel like there is no hope for life to get better. Danticat proves that there is hope. She poetically provides a looking glass into the lives of struggling Haitians. While expressing how damaged these people are through the stories staged in Haiti, she still creates optimism. Throughout the novel Krik? Krak!, Edwidge Danticat illustrates that beauty and hope can still be found in severe and dire circumstances.

She talks about how she lost some many babies in her stomach that her husband started to wonder if she was killing them on purpose. Finally, she finds what she thinks is her final chance to have a child, “I thought she was a gift from Heaven when I saw her on the dusty curb, wrapped in a small pink blanket, a few inches away from a sewer as open as a hungry child’s yawn.” (79) After losing baby after baby Marie’s hope is finally restored by finding a child in the street. Although this baby is found to be dead later, the idea of having a kid brings joy to her tragic situation. She is uplifted and overjoyed after feeling remorse from her miscarriages. Once Marie realises the baby is dead she decides to bury it. The pool man catches her, accuses her of witchcraft and alerts the police. While waiting to be arrested Marie is not indulging the thought of being locked away, instead she is imagining something better, “We made a pretty picture standing there. Rose, me, him. Between the pool and the gardenias, waiting for the law.” (96) Marie will most likely be in confinement for the rest of her life for a false accusation but rather than dwelling on it, she pictures this happy family in front of her. In this novel by Steve Tolbert, we experience the life of a young girl by the name of Channeary. Channeary lives in a small fishing village in Cambodia. They are already in a compromising situation in celebrating her eighteenth birthday at a gas station having coffee which was already established as being not the norm earlier with Marie recounting her own large party where her “mother made a large party” (154). There reality is broken when the teenagers arrive and “One of the girls went to the juke box and put money in” and they are forced to leave because of Carol condition which causes her to have a breakdown from the noise (157). The arrival of the kids forced them to come into contact with their own reality which can never coincide with the one they have fabricated. This small reminder of what the norm is supposed to be is often brought to their attention through others such as when they “could see, in the light shaft of light, a boy, two girls and a dog” (155). In this instance, they are walking on the way to their weekly picnic, which is in itself repetitive, when they are shown the norm of other having fun “the boy splashing in the water with the dog” while they are forced to go through the motions without much emotion. Yet, she was not the only person who had a right to his last moments above the earth, it seemed. Everyone, from the family who knew nothing of the anguish he had suffered in his last years, to the colleagues who saw him every day but hadn’t actually seen him, to the long-lost friends and passing acquaintances who were surprised to find that he was married, let alone dead, wanted to have a last chance to gaze upon him in his open coffin and say goodbye.

Of which, is the irony of Louise dying due to her suffering from a massive amount of depression knowing her husband is not dead, but alive. This is the prime example to show how women are unfairly treated. Death is a controversial and sensitive subject. When discussing death, several questions come to mind about what happens in our afterlife, such as: where do you go and what do you see? Emily Dickinson is a poet who explores her curiosity of death and the afterlife through her creative writing ability. She displays different views on death by writing two contrasting poems: one of a softer side and another of a more ridged and scary side. When looking at dissimilar observations of death it can be seen how private and special it is; it is also understood that death is inevitable so coping with it can be taken in different ways. Emily Dickinson’s poems “Because I Could Not Stop for Death” and “I Heard A Fly Buzz When I Died” show both parallel and opposing views on death.
Unfortunately, Maria is constantly aware of the children missing from her life and is border-lining depression. Didion shows readers many symptoms of Maria’s depression throughout the novel. For example, the narrator says “When she got home she thought about calling him [Les Goodwin], but instead she went upstairs and lay face down on Kate’s empty bed, cradled Kate’s blanket, clutched Kate’s baby pillow to her stomach and fought off a wave of the dread” (Didion 23). It is obvious that Maria is depressed; however, she cannot confide in anyone. She cannot confide in Carter because he is emotionally distant nor can she confide in her lover Les Goodwin because he is a married man. Thus, leading to Maria becoming self-destructive and unintentionally seeking an identity. For example after a party, Maria “was stopped for speeding outside Tonopah and when the highway patrolman saw the silver dress and the bare feet and the Ferrari registered to someone else” the officer found out it was indeed stolen ( Didion 154). Didion creatively shows readers that Maria is acting out unintentionally because of her lack of control over life. In fact, someone who was in his or her right mind would have not stolen a car from a famous person like the one Maria did. The sky. Open, blue, and vast. People who have been skydiving may describe the experience as amazingly freeing. However, some people may never experience this feeling of freedom in their lifetime. For the people of Haiti, even a brief moment of this feeling seems out of reach. And for them, it usually is. The experiences of fictional Haitians have been compiled into a book of short stories by Edwidge Danticat, entitled Krik? Krak! She portrays their harrowing struggles for freedom, whether the characters remain in Haiti, or have already escaped. But just escaping isn't enough. Danticat illustrates that Haitians are never truly free from the clutches of Haiti’s oppression, poverty and loss. They only achieve true freedom in death.
Grief played a large role in the lives of the Boatwright sisters and Lily Owens. They each encountered death, injustice, and sadness. Grief impacted and left an imprint on each of them. Grief proved fatal for May. August knew that grief was just another aspect of life; that it had to be accepted and then left in the past. June and Lily learned to not let grief rule their lives.
