Honor is a universal trait that many people value. However, honor is not a viable reason for barbaric acts such as murder. In Chronicle of a Death Foretold, the Vicario brothers say that honor is what motivated them to take revenge on Santiago by murdering him. But their acts don’t necessarily portray themselves as honorable people. Despite claiming they murdered Santiago to protect their family’s honor, they seem horrified by what they had done. If someone kills another person out of honor, they would be horrified by what they have done, and the pretext of doing their honorable duty wouldn’t be able to calm them down. The Vicario brothers’ behavior after the murder of Santiago is one example of why honor can not justify murder. Vicario brothers were horrified after killing Santiago and were put in jail. The persistent smell of Santiago’s corpse throughout the town and their jail cell only made it worse for them. “At that moment they were comforted by the honor of having done their duty, and the only thing that worried them was the persistence of the smell,” (Marquez 79). The smell, being a persistent reminder of the murder, bothers the Vicario brothers. Therefore, despite the brothers saying they did an honorable act, it really portrays them as dishonorable because of how they are worried by the smell, specifically the smell reminding them of the horrific act they committed. The brothers use honor not as an impetus that made them kill Santiago, but more as an excuse to justify why they had killed him. Another part of Chapter 4 that shows their fear of the crime is on page 78. “... As soon as they began to fall asleep they would commit the crime all over again,” (Marquez 78). This fear of the murder couldn’t leave their minds! The brothers were afraid of sleeping and dreaming about murdering Santiago for multiple days. The fact that they view murdering
