“The wind blows wherever it please. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.” Within the poetic image of wind, the presence of the Holy Spirit is described as something that flows freely and affects everything. This Spirit cannot be contained or restricted. The Holy Spirit is a life giving wind that acts in all of creation, and wherever this divine wind blows something new begins. Furthermore, describing the Spirit as water expounds upon the innate characteristics of this life-giving Spirit. “Like a saturated sponge creation is dripping wet with divine presence…” When water is used as a metaphor for the Holy Spirit within the Biblical text it mainly appears as the outpouring of water. “In the last days it will be, God declares, that I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh…” This description always seems to reveal the giving of new life by the Holy Spirit to any form of life whether it be the land or any living being human and …show more content…

The symbolism of fire in regards to the Holy Spirit reveals that the Holy Spirit burns through all of creation like a wildfire. The Spirit’s presence has sparked a fire in not just humanity but all of creation. “The Spirit dwells within the world like glowing fire; wherever this divine fire burns, creation is sparked into luminous being.” This presence of the Holy Spirit flowing through all things reveals God’s love for his creation. All of creation has the signature of God because of the life giving and sustaining power of the Holy Spirit. “Blowing like wind, flowing like water, flaming like fire, the Spirit of God awakens and enlivens all things.
