A film adaptation of the Newberry award winning 1998 novel “Holes” by Louis Sachar was created and directed by Andrew Davis in 2003. The themes of the power of fate to determine events, the benefits of friendship, the destructive nature of cruelty and the importance of history in everyday life, helped to make “Holes” the iconic novel that it was. Keeping elements like the motifs and the symbols helped to broadcast these themes throughout the movie. “Holes” the film is a close adaptation of the novel. Although there are minor changes from novel to film, to keep the drama alive and the audience entertained; it can’t count against the credibility of the adaptation. Cruelty causes a person to be cruel to another and start a cycle of repressed violence. In the movie, the cruelty passes through many decades and generations at Green Lake starting with Kate and Sam. They face cruelty from the town’s people because Kate is white and Sam is black. When Trout caught Kate and Sam kissing, he inflects cruelty that ends in Sam’s death. That cruelty causes Kate to become Kissing Kate Barlow, killing and robbing people, bringing cruelty to others. But, the cycle continues when Trout goes broke and searches for Kate’s ‘treasure’. When he can’t find it, he inflicts it on his granddaughter who ends up becoming the warden for Camp Green Lake. The constant flow of cruelty, in the end, destroys everything and comes back to the person who started the cycle. In the novel, things have been working almost just the same with the flow of destructive cruelty again starting with Sam and Kate. In the novel to show how heartless the warder was, she stabbed Armpit with a pitchfork because he was bathing too much; however, in the deleted scenes from the DVD, it was Magnet that was stabbed. This scene was removed because the movie was made to target a younger audience and someone getting stabbed on screen, isn’t really kid friendly. Another change due to cinematic reasons is the journey up the mountain of God’s Thumb. Instead of Zero throwing up and standing there like he was confused, in the movie, he throws up and rolls down a part of the mountain. This added more drama and put more emphasis on the connection with the Yelnats and Zeroni
