The Byzantine Empire, the eastern half of the Roman Empire, flourished as an impressive medieval civilization. This empire was rich with geography, culture, and trade connections due to its location in Constantinople, the isthmus between Asia and Europe. It also lasted for over a thousand years and reached its height and glory during the sixth century, under the reign of Justinian I (Justinian the Great) and his empress, Theodora. They both came from the lower class and gained status to work their way to being rulers of the empire. Justinian and Theodora are important figures in history because they ruled the Byzantine Empire at its height and made many reforms during that time which many still exist today.
There is little known about Justinian’s and Theodora’s early life. Justinian was most likely born to poor Slavic people and educated in Constantinople. He was adopted by his uncle, the emperor, Justin I, and later succeeded to the throne. Theodora is believed to be the daughter of a circus worker from Constantinople. As a teenager, she was an actress and a wool spinner. When she met Justinian he was overwhelmed by her and made her his mistress and empress. Together, Justinian and Theodora rose to power around AD 527 to 565 and made numerous lasting reforms.
A significant political issue during Justinian and Theodora’s reign that they were both involved in was the Nika revolt. This was when taxpayers got very frustrated and threatened to overrule the government. In a panic, the government encouraged Justinian to flee so he wouldn’t be killed, while Theodora advocated him to stay. Both Justinian and Theodora came from poor backgrounds but regardless, achieved great for the citizens of the empire. During their reign, the empire reached a golden age for arts and architecture because of Justinian’s interest in both subjects. Theodora allowed for women’s rights to gain popularity and advocated for religious acceptance. Together, they created the most important piece from this era: Justinian’s Code. These rules set a basis for laws in the Byzantine Empire as well as other civilizations of the time and even impacted today’s form of government. Justinian and Theodora ruled the empire at its height and are remembered for their legacy of reforms, many are still relevant today.
